Post Worker Campaign: What We Want from Modernisation

Comrades,

As we near Christmas, we are also nearing the end of the ‘Period of Calm’ and the weeks of negotiations on the future of our jobs in Royal Mail.

Rumours abound, of course, as to what has been discussed, agreed, or remains an obstacle to agreement.

Over the next couple of days, the negotiations could end in an agreement, total breakdown, or further extended negotiations.

What is sure is that whatever agreement eventually is signed up to by CWU HQ, it will determine the shape of our jobs and working lives for the foreseeable future.

That is why those of us involved in the Editorial Committee of Post Worker believe that members, Unit Reps, Area Reps, activists and Branch Officials need to tell the Postal Executive Committee and National Negotiators what they want out of any National Agreement.

As Billy Hayes and Dave Ward stated in their Letter to Members, on 23rd November:

“Postal workers are facing change on a scale greater than any other UK industry—the type of change that only comes along across the whole of British industry once every 50 or 60 years. The introduction of walk sequencing machinery alongside completely redesigned Mail Centre and Network operations will impact hugely on the future of the company and your job.”

The Post Worker Editorial Committee says this gives us an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change our jobs for the better.

We need to make sure that CWU HQ make full use that opportunity.

That is why we have produced the attached .pdf document, with what we believe are key policy demands for any Modernisation Agreement.

We hope that you will agree with the document, and circulate it as wide as possible amongst your members and Reps.

Please feel free to print the document, or e-mail it, as you see fit.

We believe now is the time to make sure CWU HQ hears what members and activists have to say.

Have just read the document. Excellent post. Would agree with everything in it especially the bits about full time work and progression from part time. Also spot on about the 35 hour week. Under no circumstances must we accept 35 hour week with unpaid meal relief, completely defeats the objective. Will be signing up to the petition when I get a chance. Just hope these are the type of demands Dave and Billy are putting farward.

Well I agree. The thing that hacks me off the most is the attendance procedure. Someone must have signed an agreement with that in it. Where's the on-line petition? Let's do some work to make the public aware of what's going on.

All good, I will print off and pass it round my office. Anyone who wants a job for longer than a year with the RM should be doing this. Its time we all look at the bigger picture here public included.

I thought it was imposed, without agreement, a few years ago.

How come this is the first I have ever heard of the 'Post Worker' paper ?

Probably because its a kind of hard copy version (although not connected with) of this site. Its a unofficial newspaper that does not have a set time table of production or distribution and AFAIK survives on donations (like RMC).

Therefore it wont have the reach of Courier or Voice and you have to go looking to find a copy.
