What would be the ramifications for Royal Mail if competitor companies such as DHL and TNT were to no longer be given access to our network ? Would we suddenly be awash with cash ? Does any board member know how much these companies make of our backs per annum ?

Re: DSA
I am sure when DSA started ,i think it was 2004, that the access to our network was only to be for a restricted time to allow for others to build up their own delivery service.
Yes i do think they are making money hand over fist as they would not be using DSA for parcels and packets as well

Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: DSA
Our financial position would be transformed and whilst not being "awash with cash" we would certainly be in a much healthier position. Just putting up the cost of DSA would have a similar effect without any additional workload at Royal Mail or cost to the public. Assuming about 25 million letters a day are DSA ,a penny extra on the price we charge for it would yield a quarter of a million pounds every day of the week, make it four pence and you are talking a million a day.
Sadly it aint gonna happen. Crozier won't push for it because he is paid to toe the government line and besides I suspect the likes of TNT and DHL were given cast iron assurances that they "would be looked after".

Re: DSA
I agree with you. If it were not the case, there would be more than a token 'delivery service' undertaken by TNT in Liverpool (if my memory serves), sorry that should be a trial delivery service.Eric wrote:

Reading this post, has anyone else noticed the words Crozier and Trial? Now's that a pleasant Christmas thought.

Re: DSA
It would be interesting to know if there is a fixed period whereby these companies have access to RM's network although I would imagine it will be done when the Regulator decides its appropriate.I might have a butcher's on their website.
My question really should have been what would the ramifications be if RM delivery staff staged a successful boycott of DSA .Not that I personally would encourage such an idea. It's just some people at work were talking about a boycott starting First of March next year although Im not sure what the significance of the date would be.

Re: DSA
According to Postcomm 336 million items per month Dec 2007 (RM's figures) are access items obviously a lot more 2 years on.There is no mention as far as I can see as to how long access to RM' network will last.I must presume it is open-ended.

Re: DSA
The fact is it would be illegal and as such you could be sacked for it but if the nation new how it is and why the price of stamps and why P739s are being left in stead of us delivering the items because we are being squeezed for time all the time everyday!. IT MAY MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR IT IS OUR GOVERNMENT WHICH CHOOSE THIS PATH WE WALK ALONG AND NO OTHER!. :mfo :mfo :mfoWessex wrote:It would be interesting to know if there is a fixed period whereby these companies have access to RM's network although I would imagine it will be done when the Regulator decides its appropriate.I might have a butcher's on their website.

Re: DSA
I rather suspected it might be illegal and so any such boycott would end in tears presumably unless it was blanket disobedience.I look forward to the Panorama documentary to see what take they have on Downstream Access.I for one detest delivering the stuff knowing someone is effectively taking my wage potential away. There is another aspect that interests me .Not only is my life affected by DSA but it surely is costing the taxpayer as well , the government must be losing out on profits as well.It surely means that the taxpayer is effectively subsidising the competitor companies. Here have some free money as if this country has too much of the folding stuff already. :mfok979aaa wrote:The fact is it would be illegal and as such you could be sacked for it but if the nation new how it is and why the price of stamps and why P739s are being left in stead of us delivering the items because we are being squeezed for time all the time everyday!. Re: DSA
Well surely if EVERY last one of us, from some pre-arranged date, just refused to handle DSA items, could and would RM really sack every single one of us, immediately ? The sheer practicalities of trying to deliver all the mail in the system without any postmen would make it impossible for them to do it, if there was total and mass defiance of the law ?Wessex wrote: I rather suspected it might be illegal and so any such boycott would end in tears presumably unless it was blanket disobedience.
I remember the hated Poll Tax from when I was a nipper. Many many people stood up against that and in the end it was abolished in favour of a fairer system. Isn't it worth trying to defeat DSA ????
