Maximum packet sizes?

Can anyone tell me what size a packet (on a walking round) has to be, before it is considered too big for a pouch bag, and has to be given to a driver?

I used to have the dimensions somewhere but i cannot find them.

We were told if it could go through a letter box then it went but even if it won't the barstewards still make you take it. I get really pissed off as you can only fit so much in your bag.

200mm x 200mm x 400mm
or 310mm x 100mm x 400mm

Anything above goes to drivers.

Shoe box sixe :) We had these on our bag fittings so when sorting the packets anyting that could not fit through the metal cover that was the size of a shoe box got shoved into the drivers trolly.

we have a yellow packet template fixed to a bag drop fitting. if it dont go through that then its a drivers packet. think i have seen a picture of one on here a while back.

This is one of the things I hate at this job, Have problems daily trying to give packets to drivers who refuse, they then go to line manager who make you/me take it, packet drivers seem to get away with murder there are sme decent ones but the majority of them are tossers.

i had this on friday, i had a reserve driver who wouldnt take any packets so i asked my line manager about some big 1s i had and he said id have to take them. So never the less I cut off and when my manager asked why i told him i had too many big packets to take and had to make up extra bags and leaving extra 739 forms, on saturday my line manager come round to my frame and asked if i needed any help with my packets.

You should all know the answer ? its break your bags down to fit more in that way think about it that way its a cut off or overtime the choice is yours.

Some drivers in my office have the unwritten rule, if you can lift it, you take it. I'm sure they would let a walker take out a packet the size of a fridge, most however, especially at this time, regularly band undersize packets together (and take the odd recorded delivery letter as well). Most in our office a really good, but as in every office, there has got to be one or two you get off on making peoples lives a misery. (I'm not talking about management here.)

Time to add some balance from a driver's point of view...

The official line, as said, is shoe box sized or bigger. However, I have done plenty of delivery on foot, so know the realities of trying to fit large packets in a delivery bag. When I was on a walk, I'd take any packet, even quite big ones, as long as I could fit them in the bag (Tuesdays for eg.). But equally, I'd have no qualms about leaving something I couldn't fit in for the driver. If you have a bit of trust in each other, the driver will appreciate that if you leave a packet to genuinely can't fit it in. It's all about give and take!

As a driver, I take packets a fair bit smaller than what is officially considered a driver's packet, because I know what it's like on foot. But it does annoy me when I find tiny packets - by which I mean ones which will easily fit in a delivery pouch - left for me by someone who just can't be bothered to take them himself. A case in point, a couple of Tuesdays ago, before Christmas Pressure started, the foot men had one of the lightest days in a long time (which I can verify, because my driving duty incorporates about 1 hour of foot delivery), yet one bloke tried to leave me all the mail for three separate houses because they'd each got a few flats! Even so, they were probably not even the thickness of a quarter of a normal bundle. Had it been a heavy day, I might have taken them, but basically, this bloke seemed to be taking the attitude that he 'had' to leave something for the driver!

So it works both ways.

I get on quite well with the driver who does my packets, and I cover the driving duty once in a while so I now how it goes from both sides.

Ive got a kind of unspoken agreement with the driver, he'll take a few of the smaller packets for houses on the main road, and i'll take larger, more awkward packets for drops more out of the way, flats, long drives etc

I dont really bother with the template on the drop bag fitting, if I can take it I will.

Works out well for both of us.

i also have a good driver who will take most packets i pass to him ,if i have van call sized packet that i think i can deliver i will let him know im taking it ,but if i have to leave p739 then packet will be left in drop box for him to pick up next day when he drops of my bags.this way he has one less packet to deliver and i also dont need to treck to p.o. to pouch off

What? You leave the 739'd packet in a drop box overnight? Is this allowed? I thought everything needs to be returned to the DO or pouched off correctly - personally I always go back to the DO though, as we've had instances where pouching off bags have gone missing - better to be safe and all that.
