How do you see the future on deliveries

Post by Martin Walsh »

We all know what we dont want but what are you willing to accept to safeguard jobs in the future.

From January walk sequencing will be phased in over the next 18 months. Whilst we can all argue how much prep and IPS hourage it saves the fact is with walk seqeencing it changes the arrival pattern of mail into your office in a massive way.

Currently we have basically two streams of traffic the first part 60% clears a mail centre about midnight and is in the main 1st class intra and neighbourhood district , mail sort etc. the idea is to walk sequence this mail and have that 60% in your offices for 6 in the morning.

However the remaining 40% your distant mail etc does not clear a mail centre till 4.40 in the morning. This currently comes in and forms your Inward primary sorting. However in the future it will be walk sequenced either in a mail centre or a mail processing unit. This work will need 3 passes and does a batches of 12 walks at a time. So if a walk sequencing machine is due to do the work of 4 or 5 delivery offices in that space between 4 40 then the probability is that some of the offices will not be getting that work until as late as 10 in the morning. However due to the batch process some indivduals will get their remaining work earlier than others in an office.

This will mean if currently 82% of all work including Downstream access goes through the MIST system , then that leaves appox 18% of work which will form some of the reduced IPS which an office has to perform. Plus prep will either be merging or the putting the work into the frames which is already sequenced. Royal Mail"s model which is unagreed estimates that at 100BSI levels that the average prep a walk will need under walk sequencing will be 1 hour 30. Of course that needs to be anaylised as both the Gatwick and Bristol trials have had teething problems. But the Bristol one seems to be the one Royal Mail seems to be moving their plans forward on.

The question if hourage is removed from the IPS which is now being sequenced and that only 60% of work is availible when it used to be 100% at 6 o clock what would you be willing to accept.

Longer spans with car derived vans for all walks over 1 mile from office ,

Door to Door into work load with an on going pay supplement.

Longer saturdays in return for less Saturdays

I realise all of these are being discussed in the national talks but what would you accept ?

The first issue in any national talks is reduce the working day to a 7 hour day 35hr week, everything else can be worked round about.

Yep, and then after that if longer Del Span has to come in it gets split with a RTO in the middle for meal break :dance

Saturdays is part of the USO i dont see it as stopping. However due to walk sequencing it will mean longer saturdays with some ofices finishing as late as 3

imo walk spans wont be increased too much because of health and safety issues.
more walking = more injuries, fatigue etc.

what will probably happen is more packets will be given to posties to do when they use the vans.

current drivers will probably end up doing more specials but sole driving jobs will be reduced.

dingo,
i know your only playing devils advocate, but the irony is the membership should of been asked these questions/aspirations before negotiations took place, surely?
one of the problems i find, and others have commented on,is,not that the delivery span is necessarily long enough as it is,but as a business the workload actually increases as the week goes by,so rather than winding down if you like, your actually exhausted, yet at the same time gearing up for the heaviest day.
could this be addressed?
in terms of more d2ds,maybe do a delivery then go out with packets,do the contracts/business actually exist?
by longer saturdays,i presume you mean same hours as the rest of the week, but how/why would there be less?

Deliver 60% on the first delivery; reduce the span; improve quality to the customer

Return to office; have a break; and deliver the other 40% on the second delivery

Saturdays would be first delivery only, and therefore a much earlier finish than now

And the first thing that should happen is that both sets of negotiators should all do a delivery for a week, and then start talking.

The figures you quote are total bollocks.
I'm sure you are sincere ,but just cos some RM clone gave you a print off with volumes and arrival times it don't make it true. No s**t Dingo, just cos it's written down in black and white it don't mean that it's real. One visit to a participating trial office will dispel your misconceptions. We've done sequencing trials for months now, long enough to iron out any statistically predictable variations ,and the stats you quoted are sheer bullshit. No offense ,but I think you need to query your source information

park and loop wipes out near all driving duties
however park and loop doesnt work on all duties
i have a park and loop duty with no parking  but it doesnt stop RM bringing it in

100% available at 6.00am :left: :left: :left: - How long since you worked in a DO - My office which feeds others has a normal arrival at 0700 when FTs start at 6.00am - At best I would estimate only 70% (normally less) of mail arrives before 6am and 20% of that is manual.

One question about CDV deliveries - what will happen to those units who don't have the space to park securely all the vans required to operate this system, never mind get them to operate.

My DO has space for less than 20 CDV on the loading bay and probably space for 15 more to park and leave enough room for the 600s to come in and drop. We have 5 sections mine is the smallest and we would need 14/15 CDVs under this plan (all duties are a minimum of 3 miles from the office). Taking the whole office into account I would estimate we would need 100 plus CDVs.

What I am trying to say is that if they don't take into accounts units like mine who cannot work with CDVs until we move into a bespoke building, or spilt the Office up into smaller DOs, in the New Agreement that will leave us open to longer deliveries than 3.5 hours and with weight on the shoulder - BTW electric trolleys won't work either due to terrain, storage and acceleration issues.

Not in our office they have been trying for over a year now to change are saturdays to a later finish and the office as a whole are not having it.

We have thought R/M with a big stick and hopefully we will still be able to fend them off no one wants later saturdays do they,i really do hope in the future the USO is changed and saturday deliveries are with drawn.
