Have to work 6 days a week until Xmas!

We have been told that we have to work six days a week up to christmas, part time posties only apparently. Hours are being made up to 40 per week over six days, no choice in the matter, seemingly agreed by area union (Glasgow).
Starts next week, so anyone with plans for their days off such as domestic responsibilities, christmas shopping, resting, etc. has to change their plans and work instead!
Surely this is unacceptable? Why would the union agree to members being forced to work six days a week?
Anyone got any more information on this?

No-one can change your contracted hours without your permission.
Not RM and cetainly not the union.
I think someone may have got the wrong end of the stick here.
However if you have ASKED for extra hours.Then RM can decide when THOSE hours are required most.
I would not imagine the union would be involved at all.

Bollocks, you have a contract to work X hrs a week and do not have to work any longer than this at anytime of the year, also are you on a 5 day week, if so your rest days can be taken on the day,s that they fall even if it means your dim has to cover your long weekend...this has been told to you so the dim has less hassle covering delys, if you do not want to work o/t or your day off tell him asap and any probs get in touch with your rep/area rep.

No, haven't asked for extra hours, certainly don't want to work 6 days a week, 25 hour contract but no mention in contract of number of days per week, but there is a clause (9.2) about liable to work overtime/needs of service/blah,blah,blah. Were told we were getting made up to 40 hour contract for xmas pressure and it was spread over 6 days. Anyone else from Glasgow area got any input on this one?

they are lying to you mate, you cannot be FORCED into doing overtime, if your on a 30 hour contract they can ask you to work more if you want but the final decision is yours. No union can agree to change somebodys contract it is agaisnt the law. This is another case of managers feeding posties with sh it to get them to do what they want.

The part timers in our office (Glasgow) have been put on 6hr 40 days but they were all asked if they wanted this and if they wanted to work their day off as well.
Any that didn't want to, were told they would probably be shunted out to the mail centre for the xmas pressure but they can't force you to work longer days and they certainly can't force you to work 6 days a week.My guess is, if you are on a 25hr contract, they think you don't know any better and are trying to pull a fast one just to make their lives easier.See your rep (unless you are actually in my office in which case I'd go and see the DOM yourself)

Years ago we all had to work complusory overtime at christmas as it was in our contracts of employment. However the National Union achieved an agreement called the aboliton of complusory overtime at Christmas. This allowed indivduals to opt of our working overime at Christmas. In addtion we have the working time agreement and the indivdual opts outs etc. When I first started we had 12 hours days and 2 deliveries Saturday and a Sunday delivery.

Lots of offices do agreements which make walks a certain amount of hourage over christmas but whether you do it should be voluntary. You should ask your area reps to explain things .

6hr 40 days? not bad I wouldnt mind working 6hours for 40 days.

P/T in our office were told they could work a 6 day week over xmas pressure and receive 100% xmas bonus or remain on their 5 day week and their bonus would be pro rata, they opted for the 5 day week.

Ripio, the union has agreed that the 6 day week can be offered to P/T workers if they WANT it. (I'm based in Glasgow)

I was offered full time for pressure period but declined it as am to knackered after 25hrs let alone 40.. anyway got the kids to look after..

I remember those days too good for the money but alas it is no longer the case those times were 1.45 and 1.65 ot rate and double time Saturday and double time and a half B/H not Bullying and Harassment but Bank Holiday!. God knows what Sundays are paid at now?.

Even on a 5-day week the option should be made available to part-timers to increase their hours to the full 40 over the 3 christmas pressure weeks, entitling them to 100% christmas attendance bonus rather than pro-rata. At our DO overtime will be paid at SA rate which is in line with local agreement from previous years. Those working their day off can claim O/T or have a day in lieu. Much of this is covered by national agreements I suspect anyway.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Your responses make sense, what we were told by DOM didn't make sense. Will take it up again on Monday, but meantime still interested to hear your opinions, particularly from more Glasgow area people.

variaton of contract you must agree to all changes if not the staus quo should apply!. The only benefit i can see is in O/T payments and christmas bonus everything else is lose lose!.
