SENIORITY RULE..

Just wanting to know if SENIORITY still exists in RM as in our office the Manager is now hand picking who's going up to F/T, we've lost 7 or more Full Timers over the last 2 years which have not been replaced and it is taken it's toll on the rest of us i.e more pressure, work & stress!!! Now there's a guy who's only been with RM less than a year getting made up to F/T thus by-passing every other member of P/T staff who's ahead of him in Years of Service, surely this can't be right??? plus another geezer been there about 3 years made up to F/T gets silly amounts of O/T without any other senior member of staff being asked if they want any and to top it off is now being trained up to work in the PHG locker!! This Vacancy should've been put up on the work's notice board outlining that the Vacancy is available, now i've been with RM 15+years other colleagues 20 years and up have been overlooked, surely hand picking staff is a form of Favourtism and should be out-lawed... What everyone else's views on this and does it go on up and down the whole country?

Which is exactly what seniority is in a way - length of service does not make you the best as proven by some runners in our office.

All duties are to be advertised in R/M and allocated through the seniority list your rep will know all this and is the right way to do business.

How on earth can you think that way ?? that means every member of staff with Seniority is to shafted for someone hand-picked. I and along with others are quite capable of workin at the front desk.. Plus the staff that are P/T's some with 10 or more years service aren't to be moved up to F/T or even asked first. Vacancy's are there to be advertised along the correct procedures but sadly are being ignored.

there is absolutely no logic to seniority in the majority of cases. for example recently in my office, one employee had been working regualrly on a rural, while it was being advertised. then due to seniority he had to train someone else to do the job when he was just as/more capable at doing it himself. 5x8x9=£360 down the drain.

We only use true seniority on a re-pick now. Its not always liked but is the fairest way. The longer you stay the better choice you get.

That does not sound fair.
Its quite simple in our place if a driving walk goes up on the board you can only apply if you are already a driver and then its seniority.

Every duty may be 3.5hrs (or whatever the local arrangement is) but Council Estates won't get as much Christmas Tips as Leafy suburbia - thats why I support Seniority (ps 6 years in I have less seniority than some of the PTs in my DO).

Can I ask something about seniority - maybe for the people who have worked for royal mail for longer times. When you started, how long did it take to get your own walk? I'm assuming turn over of staff was less when people were happier at work, so did it take a long time even then before you had your own duty? I have found since joining royal mail, a couple of years ago, that although staff have left at my office, due to the reduction in hours they don't get replaced and therefore I haven't moved up the seniority rankings at all. I don't think I will ever get to a position of having my own duty, which although I don't mind swapping walks a lot, the thought of never having a proper rota which is done in advance is depressing to say the least. I know everyone has to do their time in the reserves team, just wondered how long and whether it is a longer or shorter time now than in previous times.
