The will of the people
Sunday 22 November 2009 If you were looking on the internet or in the Sunday papers for anything regarding the People's Charter convention at the weekend, you would have had a long and fruitless search.

As far as the capitalist media was concerned, it didn't happen, it never was, or, if it was, it wasn't relevant.

Like matter into Stephen Hawking's black holes, it vanished into obscurity, but unlike in Professor Hawking's reality, it didn't even leave a trace of Hawking radiation to illuminate the area.

But that is simply untrue and, in the general fashion of the British media, its lies of omission are normally more significant than its lies of commission.

And so it was at the weekend with the People's Charter. You would never think that this charter and its attendant petition has been accepted overwhelmingly by the representatives of over six million British people at the recent TUC Congress.

You wouldn't think that committees to press the charter are springing up all over Britain.

And you certainly wouldn't think that some of the policies contained in the charter represent the settled will of the mass of the British people.

Getting rid of tax havens, where the rich and gormless stash the billions of their ill-gotten gains.

Nationalising the rail system so that profiteers cease making millions from failing to get you to work on time. Setting councils to work building the three million new homes that Britain's homeless and poorly housed so desperately need, thus bringing back into work the thousands of building workers at present idle and pumping money into a bank-starved economy.

Ending the futile war raging in Afghanistan and bringing the troops safely home. All these and more are both charter policies and the will of the people.

They are hardly contentious and hardly extreme.

And, importantly, they represent a position which, since it reflects the will of the majority in Britain, could give the Labour Party a fighting chance of winning the next election, given the admittedly remote possibility of new Labour's clique allowing them to be adopted.

There is much talk in the left in Britain of unity. But there's precious little action on it. Leftwingers seem content to fight about the rights and wrongs of one position as regards the Labour Party against another and, meanwhile, the BNP gains ground, Peter Mandelson's free-market policies move further to the right and Gordon Brown is so wedded to Atlanticism that he doesn't seem able to move without US approval.

The People's Charter is a real chance to move us out of the ridiculous impasse that the combination of new Labour and the profiteers have worked us into.

Let those inside the Labour Party who see a possiblity for change argue within that party for the charter as an election manifesto.

Let those outside, for one reason or another, fight to unite the trades councils, the tenants' associations, the young, the elderly, the unemployed and all the myriad organisations of working people around the charter.

Let's get the million signatures that the charter seeks and ram 'em down the throat of the party in power.

And if that doesn't happen to be the Labour Party it will be because that party has failed to read and respond to the will of the electorate and has continued on its suicidal love-affair with the profiteers and the free-market bandits of the City. But be aware - we won't get any help from the bourgeois media.

On all the things said at the People's Charter convention, one of the most significant was by Professor Mary Davis, who asked: "You can be a private socialist but what's the point of that?" We must get it together and learn to shout from the rooftops a message that we can all unite around.

And the charter is just such a message.
