Sure we can
In reply to comments of mine here on this board, one poster has replied as follows:
Me - "I'm sure I speak for the vast, vast majority of posties, when I say that we are ready and willing to meet the challenges facing the business, we will find the extra gears required to do the extra work."
Reply - "I don't think you do. Extra gears - WTF "
Me - "If it is possible, then it will be done, and we should wear down the pavement under our feet in order to serve our country."
Reply - "HA HA. Very Churchillian. The Courier will just love you!"
Surely this attitude will get us no-where. We should be talking ourselves up, not putting ourselves down, when we have drawn the attention of so many following our decision to stop delivering mail.
A slogan of one of our main competitors, TNT, is 'Sure we can'. During the crisis at RM and the crisis on our streets, where we can hardly avoid being run down by the trucks of our competitors that are overloaded with parcels that we refused to deliver, we have to remain positive.
We should never turn down an opportunity to prove ourselves. With trucks driving around saying 'Sure we can', and hard-working people up and down the country losing their jobs through no fault of their own, the image of posties kicking their feet at the gates while a backlog spills over behind them containing the redundancy notices of thousands of manufacturing, retail and financial workers all collected and stamped by TNT, that image of posties unwilling to work in such times as these, is not ideally suited to our cause.
I can't speak for TNT, but I sure do wish that the ethos of the RM delivery office could aspire to the message being given on the side of TNT trucks. I like that message, and the image that the RM strike portrays only adds value to their message. Quite literally, I see the trucks and vans of our competitors leaving me standing in the road behind on a daily basis. Now I know that essentially our competitors are greatly jealous of RMs standing in the market, and of the luxury we have of being able to deliver anything anywhere in the country, but we need to keep moving. We need to rise to the challenge that the company is facing, and we need to stay ahead in real terms of our competitors, by doing whatever it takes.
Our once safe jobs are now on the line, and it is up to us to save them. I don't believe that strike action is for the good of the company or for our own long-term good. I believe that the company means to engage its competitors by transforming the job it asks of us in order to strengthen our well-earned reputation and bring the customers back to us, and to do that it needs a reliable work force. I now deliver alongside someone who is more qualified to work in a bank than hand out leaflets, which goes to show that the relative security of being a postie these days is a job in demand, yet this can't last for ever. We can no longer afford to gamble on the relative security of being the national postal service, or at least that is my analysis of the outcome of our recent industrial action. Today for instance, I finished under my time, and not because I worked that much faster, but because my mail bags were only one third full today. Snail-mail is going out of fashion, so I say let's not fight with the company over who has the right to make the changes necessary to modernise the service, but instead work with the company, and work so damn hard that we may actually survive these difficult times and maybe even come through it stronger and in a better position to prosper than before.
Live long and prosper.

I stopped reading at the beginning of the first paragraph.Sorry.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Absolutely right PeeJay but this is the "I'll only do the bare minimum and only care about my own wage packet" forum.

I may not agree with him, and I am sometimes put off by his language style and the length of his posts but he certainly debates better than some on here.Night Tonic wrote:Absolutely right PeeJay but this is the "I'll only do the bare minimum and only care about my own wage packet" forum.

Re: Sure we can
Customer: I want my mail earlier like we used to have it.
RM: Sorry you will have it later
Customer: That is no good to me
RM: Tough
Customer: I'll switch to email and other couriers then for all the important stuff
This is a true story of Royal Mail's modernisation plan, its a plan of failure so how can you give 100% for a company that is deliberately failing its customers and employees?
Sorry if you're mail centre worker as you don't see the customer reaction to late deliveries. My delivery office fails around 80% of special deliveries with no care whatsoever from RM management.
This is progress! This is RM modernisation! This is suicide and stupidity!

Re: Sure we can
i agree peejay but only if royal mail play fair with us and realise there has to be a line on the amount of work they give us, at the minute if we give an inch they take a milw. There needs to be a firm agreement in place.

Re: Sure we can
im sorry peejay but we can barely cope with the packets et al we have already. i for one am thankful for these other carriers if it werent for them we wood really b snowed under even more. we as a company do not possess the forethought and the intelligence in upper management that a company this size needs, to take us forward and to maybe realise the true potential that exists within the postal market. Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate. sometimes doing the right thing is the best thing and sometimes you have to draw a line in the sand.

When I come up on the lottery, can I have you and PeedmyPants as my butler and chauffeur? Oh, please say you both will, as I want to make absolutely sure that I'll have two quaintly old-fashioned, know their place types, really busting their balls for the £5 an hour I'll be paying you, because you'll both be ever so glad that you at least have a job. If not, I'll have to hire decent people, and pay them a decent wage, damn-it.Night Tonic wrote:Absolutely right PeeJay but this is the "I'll only do the bare minimum and only care about my own wage packet" forum.
