Family friendly working..hows does yours work

Just started family friendly work pattern through my choice due to partners early starts.
I used to work 6.15 till 1.30pm-2.30pm depending on day I,m now working 8.15 till 15.30- 16.30 which means I,m missing the IPS and I take up usually a third of a duty thats been thrown up due to either sickness or OT.
Now I know its going against the grain and going for later starts but I wish I had gone down this route a while back,I do the job properly use a bike and have every bag dropped out to me.The extra third is a bit of a slog but give me an extra 2 hours in my bed or spending time with my daughter taking her to nursery anyday.

Not delivered past 15.00 yet and my own walked finished before 14.00 everyday and family friendly it is as my daughter is in Nursery from 8.00am till 17.00pm, I know its a wrong to take a the break and the end but thats how its working for me.

i took on the job to work in with my kids especially with my son being diagnosed with adhd. It is now a fight to get started on time and never mind getting finished on time. Same old argument with dom that job to fit in with kids not kids to fit in with job. Feel like i am hitting my head off brick wall every time.

you might find this interesting and worth checking out caring for children section underneath.firms that do activally involve themselves in family friendly duties actually find that productivity improves.so a win win situation.

i think 6.30 to 14.30 is more family friendly
my wife drops kids at school then goes to work and i pick them up and we all eat together every night,

Surely family friendly is based on an individuals personal requirements, so what is family friendly for family (a) may be totally the opposite for family (b). I must admit, I dont know how Royal Mail fits this in with the USO, but I would imagine it is like everything else, if it gets in their way, they totally ignore it, just as they do managers wilfully delaying mail. I have had my mail delivered this week at 4.35pm 5.18pm. This is good, in the past it has been after 7pm. Still we keep on delivering a first class service. Lol

As long as it suits you and your family,and RM accept it good luck ,I say nowadays compared to years ago with both partners working you have to do what ever!

at least 20 mins before you leave the office,you cannot bank the 40 mins until the end of the shift.

Family friendly working is supposed to provide a work/life balance
Both of you appear to be on the opposite of family friendly hours.

Rest breaks - a break during your working day

The requirements are:

* the break must be in one block
* it cannot be taken off one end of the working day - it must be somewhere in the middle
* you are allowed to spend it away from the place on your employer's premises where you work
* your employer can say when the break must be taken, as long as it meets these conditions

It says its a recommendation - so as I read it the business has to provide the breaks as per the law ie 40 minutes in the middle of the working day, but it is ultimately an individuals choice whether to take them or not and when.

My situation is similar to that of Jimmy Carrs Laugh.

I got a written agreement from my DOM at the time that I could take my break at the end of the day, to allow for picking up from pre-school, under the flexible working for famlies rules...

It is ultimataly an individuals choice whether they follow any Health and Safety recommendations until something goes wrong then it becomes a legal matter.

This would be covered in the "your responsibilities as an employee section".

Whether you HAVE to take them or not depends on your DOM and when he lets you go out on delivery. Our boss lets us go without them ,so for the normal lads thats 9:35 , or earlier of every PT round is thrown off, which it very rarely is. Theres 2 offices near us, 1 doesnt let anyone go until after the 20min break which is 9:55 no matter if everythings in or not, the other office has 90% FT staff and he lets them go when everythings chucked off, so they leave around 840, usually earlier. Im on FF ,start 45 mins earlier than everyone at my office and I still see people from other offices driving past me going home when ive got 2 bags left, and im killing myself. Its heartbreaking at times

Your DOM is in breach of H&S regulations

Although he cannot force you to take them
He cannot do anything that encourages you not to take them.i.e allowng you to leave early knowing you have not had a break.
BTW this rant is aimed at your DOM not you,I know how difficult it is to balance work/home.I am lucky i've always been a 5.00 start but fridays are still a nightmare.

Cyclingrich,How long is your delivery span?

According to Pegasus its 3.37 but I do not fcuk about on my delivery and I,m a very keen cyclist I can knock it out in 3 hrs and thats with 20% d2d. No pussying about talking to people and I have a good working relationship with my packet man and he takes packets that I know I,m not going to get rid off and I take his large ones that I know people will be in.
Only problems I have is with the other thirds I do when fuckwits use their cars and have no bag drops.
