Overtime kills jobs?

Anyone else think this? Every week, half of my office is asked to do their day off. How many jobs would this create if people just refused?

The government should bring in a law that forbids workers from going more than 2 hours over their contracted hours.
How many of the jobless millions would have jobs to go to, but for the individual greed of workers and management's minimisation of the workforce in order to save money?

Isn't there the 48 hr directive thing,i know it's in but seems to be ignored.
When it 1st came in a few years ago all hell broke loose.

RM also handed a form out last year asking if you wanted to exceed the 48 hr limit, if memory serves any overtime booked beyond 48 hrs lands employer with a potential fine unless the opt out signed.

there is a 48 hour limit, but every year we are asked to sign a waiver to agree to work more hours.most sign this including me , although i seldom work o/t.its the old chicken and egg arguement is it. does a low basic wage produce high levels of ot ?.
or does high level of ot produce a low basic wage?.
the theory is that most workers only look at the bottom line of their payslip
so they work extra hours to get decent wage
but if there was a complete ban on ot perhaps our basic wage would increase
as we would become more millitant and demand one

The opt out form used to come out at xmas only,haven't signed one in years tho.

yes any o/t over 48 you needed to opt out, also after 10hrs over the 40 your pay drops back to standard time pay. seems you won/t stop some people working o/t no matter what rate pay is.

Overtime is cheap labour for RM . Not pensionable ,no holiday entitlement ,Fools to yourselves ,RM love it. Stick you on a 16 hr contract and the management will be laughing all the way to the bonus bank

The 48 hour thing is generally a farce anyway.

The company have a few ways this average can be measured and one of them is a rolling 17 weeks.
So this means you need to work consistently over a long period for them to be in breach of the law.
Although lets face it most people sign the opt out anyway cos if it comes to the managers or DOMs
worrying about if somebody is coming close to it then they just offer the O/T to someone who has opted out.

Loads of part timers in my office work full time hours( on full time dutys) every week and then moan they can get a full time postition.This has been happining for years so the full time postitions are there put RM don't want to give them out . Maybe a months overtime ban would show RM how many full timers are really needed ,but then again while they save money on annual leave,pensions,and bonuses why should they ?

He He - I always refuse to sign mine.
