I think it depends on your age when you start. If you are in your 20’s the job will certainly tone you up and build your stamina. But 35+ and I recon the daily slog will start to have a reverse effect bringing on joint and back problems early.

You should (in theory) be less affected buy heart and respiratory problems due to the regular exercise though. :Very Happy

I've never been on the 'slim' side but feel I'm quite fit, as for making you feel old I have to take painkillers nearly everyday to get through a delivery.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

If you're not careful this job will cripple you, too many people from my office have had to go for early retirement because their back is ****ed.

It doesn't make you that fit either, I recently took up running again and it hurt, a lot!

I've been a walkman for close to 15 years. And I'd consider myself a fit ( 3.5 / 4 hour walk everyday) postie who doesn't smoke or drink 'that' much.

Couple of years ago, I went to Wales and tried to walk up a hill. Twenty minutes in I thought my heart was going to explode and my lungs were gonna implode on me. Muscles ached that had never ached before and I wanted to die.

It's like when you have a week off work and your first day back is like some one's put a gun to your head an made you walk to the Russian Front.

So many Posties in our office have broken down with Sciatica, knackered knees and bad ankles due to the Royal Mail's well calculated 10% drop in mail over the last few years.

Aside from all of that..mustn't grumble. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :d'oh!

i dont think it matter what age you are but it depends that if you have an injury its whether you get a chnace to recover from it,once you have an injury your body over compensates and then its a case of let sleeping dog lie.as for people taking painkillers to get through please see a dr i used to take painkillers regulary and unfortunately s i let the damage continue until i needed a operation to right it.also if there is away of taking the weight off your back use it .

getting weight off my back isn't a problem for me if it's too heavy and no trolley I double back to boxes to refill deadwalking if necessary. the main problem I have is my ankles. constantly changing speed, directions and gradients does me no favours. and suffer from sprains on a regular basis. trouble is there is no time to recover properly so they are gradually weakening further leading to more problems. guess what my DOM says? I'm careless as I'm always falling given if fallen on 2 times which were weather related the other 4 time have just been going over on my ankle. I at the point where I can not even report it or I risk getting conducted. a bit of a piss take really there are those in my office that have been conducted for all sorts of ilness and injuries I don't want my name added to that list. my latest was Mon went over on my ankle imediately stepped out of van at beginning of duty had to walk on it for 3 hours luckily I'm day off today but I know I have 4 days to work on a row the rest of the week so it's not gonna get rested.

I think there are different types of "fitness". Being a postman is a lot of exercise but it is anaerobic.Just because you walk around for hours it does not mean you can run a marathon.
As for putting on weight - I had to cover a PHG backshift one summer and put on about 10 kilos. It has taken about 5 years to get it back off.But thats middle-age for you.

Ive always said I would be fitter and healthier if i had desk job... doing this job by the time i'm finished every day i'm so tired, hungry and irratible its just a case of get home, pig out on carbs and other comfort food then spend the rest of the day dozing. ive actually put on weight in the time ive worked for RM.

I'm sure if i had an 'easier' job i would have the time and energy to prepare healthy meals and carry on previous leisure activities... mountain biking, rock climbing etc none of which i do these days.
