Christmas Tips..What are some people thinking?!!!

Post by Dushku2309 »

I love my customers, they are like the starting line-up for the Wacky Races and the Muppet Show rolled into one. Smiles, cups of tea and the occasional wink from a milky cataract eye always makes me smile ( and throw up in my mouth a bit)

But come Christmas, they go off at the deep end when it comes to tips. From one woman giving me a fiver and asking for change to some guy who runs a 'porn empire' giving me £25 each year. The usual "Get yourself a drink, lad" £2 is always welcome ( If your buying a large bottle of Coca Cola that is) but some years it gets ..weird.

Four cans of bitter, a bottle of wine I couldn't fit in my bag and had to carry for three hours, 20p, Terry's Chocolate ball thingy, socks and batteries for my 'walk-man'. But I can't be the only one who gets 'gifts' that go beyond the pale..

Come on let's hear ya ...

I was once given one of the tiny minature bottles of brandy!!!!
Never was sure if they were being genuine or if it was their way of telling me what they thought of me.

A few years ago an old woman who used to come out and speak to me every day gave me a bar of soap.

It got better over the years though (possibly in line with her thoughts on my personal hygiene :chuckle ) and she gave me a fiver last year.

Had an old dear on my delivery who was always nice and polite, one xmas i'd just delivered to her house and was halfway down the road in the snow when i heard her shout me back...she told me she forgot my tip so went into the house to get it. 10 very cold minutes later she reappeared and told me to close my eyes and hold out my hands. I played along hoping to get a nice crisp tennor or a few cans of larger but she instead put a shrivelled up tangarine in my hand, told me not to eat it all at once and wished me merry xmas then went back inside. Proper felt like chucking it at the old bird.

A good one happened some years ago to an oldie (retired now) on a rural. These were the days when you got mainly 50p’s.
My mate had just finished a long dead walk section on one side of the road in the poring rain and was nearly back to his van when at the furthest house he hears “koueee Postie”. Thinking he had miss-delivered he starts plodding back cursing under his breath, however once he got closer he could see the women waving a fiver, a fortune tip back then.
He quickened his step feeling much better with the world and gave her his best “yes madam” smile. She replied “oh thanks for coming back, this is for the milkman its his Christmas box, he’s float is parked just by your van, I ve missed him could you please give it to him. Oh merry Christmas then”. She closed the door before he could say anything. The soppy old sod stomped back and gave it to the milkman as well. :left: :left: :left: :left: :left:

One of my mates was delivering his round and came to a house that had left a pack of beer at the door for a tip. No-one was in at the time so the next day he knocked on the door to say thank you. They told him the tip wasnt for him  It was for the dustbin men :d'oh! Could he please return them

I am grateful for any tip I get especially from the older folk but I did find one funny last year. A women customer (not old) held out a fiver and said “ have you got £3 change if so you can have this” :Very Happy

I didn’t have it on me (leave money in my bag in the van as dropped enough over the years) so I said “sorry but may I suggest you leave what you would like to give me in your porch tomorrow”. She left £2.50 and a card so I got a raise. :Very Happy :Very Happy

A lady 2yrs back use to give me a hanndful of sweets and some cards to hand out to her neighbours as she was on a oxygen tank, anyway last year she gave me this plastic picnic plate , thought this has gone up in the world, but sadly she was giving a lot of things away as she had decided to give up life and starved herself of the oxygen tank and passed away soon after xmas,

on to a lighter note, I always get one couple that give me xmas box end of november as they are busy which consists of a bottle of wine and a fiver or tenner cannot remember, I have a lot of retired folks on mine the ones on there own give the most and the business give nothing. with recession i will be down but normally get chocs and wine, one person last year asked if I drank and I was nursing a hangover lol from our posties drink up the day before, usually get £75= but have been on the walk for about 4yrs
they even sent me a couple of get well cards when i was off in the summer for 10 weeks after a RTA while on delivery
:Boo hoo!
