Yes

Your paid to sort and deliver mail, if the DOM wants to reduce the amount of time you have for prep he must accept he puts you at risk of not being able to complete within your duty time.

God we don't help ourselves do we.

He asked you to sort some mail, and explained the reason why ?

Yep he can tell you to do IPS but as it's not in your contract I don't think prep tests are allowed. Can someone confirm this?

I ask this because you must be under a disavantage if you are expected to deliver the same result as a full timer who obviously has 'more practise'.

quite right. if you don't want overtime, you have a certain amount of time to deliver mail and if you are asked to eat into that time by sorting then delivery is going to suffer. usually they hope you will rush round and do the extra in the same amount of time. not on my watch baby :Very Happy

The guy was only asking. Dont see him insulting his DOM in his post.

if they have you on a rolling contract technically they cant as they are in breach of the fixed term contract act witch clearly states you cant have two people working comparable jobs but with less favourable contract terms. they get round this at my office by not having rolling contractors on the sorting.

the fixed term contract act 2002 clearly states that if your on a fixed term contract ie 3 monthly, 12 monthly etc.. you cant do the same job as somebody else that has a more favourable contract. pretty much if your on a part time contract and you go in and do ips plus prep your walk and deliver it but only get say 30hrs per week while somebody else is doing the same but gets 40hrs per week it would breach that employment law.

Edit http://www.opsi.gov.uk/sr/sr2002/20020298.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; <--- worth the read if you are on a fixed term contract.

depends what type of contract you are on but i would say if you are unsure of anything regarding working conditions, treatment etc.. get yourself down your local CAB for free advice and go from there. People don't realise we have lots of rights if you can be bothered to fight for them. From personal experience i would say many different employers also are not up to scratch with employment law and many times do things that they cant, or shouldn't do. Once again though as im not a trained solicitor if your unsure go seek advice.

I'm a part timer and we do IPS maybe once or twice a week when its needed. Our deliveries are shite (Hi Swindon MC :wave ) and we often get hardly any mail on the 1st lorry at 5am and then get a full lorry finally rock up about 7:15

When that happens everyone just dives on the IPS and we get it done in one big scramble.

The orginal Question - can part timers be instructed/asked to go on sorting.

Yes since 2007 at least - it comes under "reasonable request". However, it is also unreasonable for them to expect you to go over your hours (or beyond 30 min flex) if the combination of prepping your duty, helping sort and delivering would take you over your duty time.
