Further talks will take place in December with the aim of finalising a deal by the end of 2010.

The dispute centres around the modernisation of the Royal Mail. The CWU agrees that job cuts are necessary - but disagrees on how many.

The two sides also disagree over changes to pay and working conditions for Royal Mail staff that remain in their jobs.

we are gonna get shafted on pay people. :whistle :cfo :mfo

Don't mention money to RM, they go all weak at the knees and start blubbering, their eyes mist over at the thought of their bonus. A bit like Gollum in the Lord of the Rings with "His Precious".

Your arithmetic is shocking. Especially as it is wrong by a factor of 10.

50,000 x 300 is £15 million a week or, a more mind-boggling

£780 MILLION A YEAR

So, if they spend £1.2 billion (= £1200 million) loaned to them by the government, after allowing for the up-front cost of redundancy payments and interest payments on the loan (which I can't estimate easily), it doesn't take a genius to see that the annual savings would, in say five years, pay for the transformation of the business and leave it in a hugely profitable state prior to the inevitable full-scale privatisation

You can also add on savings for Employer National Insurance each week on £300 would be probably £30 week. Contributions to Pension Scheme @ 20% another £60 Savings on Uniform, Reduced Management Costs (Cant wait for these). The savings go on and on. They could give those left £100 a week payrise and it would be a drop in the ocean. Unfortunately the only place that drop is going to fall is in the bank accounts of Crozier & Co.
