What do u do if you have plans for Tommorrow?
Let's say I'm working in London but becuse of the strike tommorrow have just left for Wales to spend the night with relatives. What happens when I get to Wales and after a few pints in the pub find the strike is off? If you can't get back to your workplace in time becasue of a last minute change will you be diciplined?

We have this arguement all the time at our place cos IA is not a day off it is a day of striking and people should be attending picket lines at their place of work.
Where I work there is about 1100 people yet it is always the same 50-60 people who attend picket lines. That is why people should not be arranging weekend breaks, rounds of golf etc.

Technically as you were not available for work and therefore in breach of contract - yes I suppose you could be disciplined. However, IIRC there were occasions in 2007 when strikes were called off at short notice and I think they just stopped your pay to cover the missing time.opgpat wrote:Let's say I'm working in London but becuse of the strike tommorrow have just left for Wales to spend the night with relatives. The thing with a strike is you are withdrawing labour but saying that you are available for work, if you go off on a jolly or a family visit, then technically your are not available for work.

That's a fair point, incidentally I've been on both pickets this time round and it's been good fun. We had a 40% turn out in a office of 100plus so not too bad.BRAVEHEART09 wrote:We have this arguement all the time at our place cos IA is not a day off it is a day of striking and people should be attending picket lines at their place of work.

Cheers True Blue that clears things up. I guess we will be getting over 12 hrs notice which, as it comes in the middle of a standard working week, isn't too bad.

Call your union rep. You probably can get away with not showing up but it's best to take the temperature. Do you work for a manager who'll make a federal case out of it or someone who'll just shrug their shoulders and not care?

CaN WE NOT GET A DIFINITVE ANSWER FROM SOMEONE WHO KNOWS??
Yet again it will be up to the discretion of the DOM to decide whether someone will be disciplined or not!
whats the official ruling here?
