My thoughts are that a rep is only as good as the support he gets from the members of his unit. After all a rep is exactly the same as every postman/postwoman in the office they only difference is that they have decided to take on extra work and hassle voluntarily, and because of this they get release occasionally to help members, negotiate with the management and so they can get trained up on various aspects that help improve the free service they give.

If anyone thinks they have a weak rep,it may mean he does not have enough support and back up from members. If so then perhaps it may be worth setting up an unofficial committee to give them that back up.

I am with TBT on this, I have taken it upon myself to learn the 'ins and out's' and as such members come to me when the rep is busy or away. Of course I can only tell them to see the rep on his return but I can advise them what their options might be until then.

It helps people sleep until they can see their rep.

ive been rep in my office for a short time, since i took on the role ive helped a few lads get away with a thing or 2 because of the dumb-ass managers, but recently the dom & his joeys have been trying to force things through without aggreeing it with myself. this has got everyones back up and made our office stronger than ever, next step is to stop using our cars on delivery. support your rep, and we.ll support you :Very Happy :

it is sweeping generalizations like the above that start divisions amongst the ranks. i bet you're not known for your motivational speeches.
first point, what a poor attitude to tar everyone with the same brush. secondly you do not know me, you do not know if i moan, you do not know if i help out or not, you do not know if i'm willing to lead the line or not, you do not know if i'm grateful or not. i would be glad if you could keep such opinions to yourself.
i don't know whats wrong with you, wrapped to tight i would say. but to start a thread like this, all you moaning ungrateful's bow down to me. beggers belief.
i would suggest some deep breathing or medatation, failing that a j. arthur. :wave

What destroys all the work a rep puts into the office is more often than not torn to pieces by the lads they are representing.

When will the staff realise this fact instead many jump on the band wagon and start slagging off the rep. Its usually the ones with the biggest mouths and the most to say but dont have the balls to stand for the reps job.

Time after time after time members do not listen to there reps why because they cant see the bigger picture they are so wrapped up in there own little world that they dont give a s**t .

At present the reps job is extremely difficult .There are daily attacks on our members there is so much literature out there to learn its daunting. They get lied to by there DIMS regarding local agreements etc etc etc.

Our rep has asked the lads whilst we are in this dispute not to do nights but what happened the big mouths starting stamping there feet why because they are selfish bar stewards ( agree with me or not on this i dont care). What flabbergasted me with these individuals is that they then chose to do nights 3 hrs after our first strike ended helping clear the back log and they know that if they didnt do it how much of a mess our office would be in.

Its commonly known as the me me syndrome f**k the bigger picture im only interested in the hear and now.

People need to realise that a rep chooses to do the job for the better of the office and for the members of the cwu to have protection during office hours.

Im going to end my little rant now as im getting rather angry and frustrated the more i think about some of the idiots in our office making our reps job harder.

If you have a good strong rep in your office then for gods sake support him/her and give some back up in these troubled times.

no offence intended. i do support my rep. i don't moan, i do help and i am grateful. thats why i objected to the original post. it brands everyone the same. hardly conducive to all pulling as one.
edit. i also agree with every word that you said MoNkEyBoY. the me me crowd does my head in.
