Stations
Travelled up from Plymouth to Derby yesterday evening, and stopping at Exeter St Davids,Bristol Templemeads,Cheltenham,Birmingham New Street and Derby and thought about the old days and working on the staions and how busy they use to be with mail bags everywhere,T.P.Os in and out,Parcel Trains,a hive of activity, and then observing how deserted these stations
were last night ,no trace whatsoever of Royal Mail,as if we had never existed.
I wonder if ghosts of former postmen still walk those platforms. If they do I wish they'd put the willys up Mandleson :mfo

Re: Stations
And when it arrived by train it enabled us to go out on delivery early! Not like we do now.
Customers enjoyed getting their mail before they went to work, now they have to wait (in some cases) until mid afternoon before it arrives!
Another thing of the past is Royal mail torches! Will they ever return?

The torches will return......for evening deliveries

So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
Illegitimi non carborundum

Re: Stations
Happy days loading barrows with mail bags which did not have any brakes.
Hard work when offloading the trains but nice rest in between train timetables.
Hardly any Health &Safety in them days you steered these barrows with a handle
I have seen them tip over on the rail track.
Managers were postmen who worked their way up they showed respect for their staff
and staff respected them.
Sad to see the state of Managers to day who do not even respect them selfs
Their just Yes men with no conscious

Re: Stations
The office I work in is next to a station, and used to have a connection straight into the building. That's what I call integrated transport!

Re: Stations
Same at my office just imagine how eco friendly it was using the rail network.
These tossers in charge to day do not have a clue
Madelson should be sent to a remote railway station as a station master along with Brown and Crozier(O! Mr Porter)

Re: Stations
We used to have an electric 'tug' that pulled mates full of mail. You used to have to drive it down the platform and down a ramp and across the track. If the lights flashed saying a train was coming when you were halfway across it was hair raising to say the least! . Happy days

Re: Stations
Our Station used to have old fashioned water lifts (Victorian) you walked in with your Loaded Barrows(No gate to open or shut)
To operate this lift you pulled a rod which operated the water pumps.Slowly the lift went down(or up) it was fun to say the least.
These lifts were removed eventually on Health & Safety Grounds
(Please note:I was a young nipper in those days)
Can you beat that

Re: Stations
station duty in summer servicing the north east tpo was great, winter time you froze to death
.As a new boy 1 st night station duty, how they got that many bags onto the trolley god knows.I thought this looks interesting
.soon found out, told to get on front and grab handle, then they all pushed like mad,we took off down the ramp swung it across the tracks up the other side, it scared the crap out off me
.Im shaking like a leaf and my mates are taking the piss.
happy days.
