While Rome burnt

Post by Anura »

While working on the last strike day something i do because i simply cant see the point of risking loosing customers and the following loss of duties.....(its ok for the final mile posties they still get the work comin in from downstream access)
I have to say how pissed off and generally disapointed i was in the actions of various members of office staff who, after donning the jeans/tee shirts and steels came down to help the workers like it was some sort off blitz spirit, ohhh what a jolly jape!!!!!
The guys out on strike were generally dismissed as fools, no one concidered what they and their families must be going thru......dont the management think that these guys have been mishandled? taken off a 6 till 2 duty monday to friday only to be dumped on a 23.00 to 10.00 wednesday to sunday duty??? how would the managements family cope with that upheaval? many guys in Royal Mail need 2 incomes into their households......are their partners just suposed to change their careers to suite Royal Mail?
Royal Mail has looked after me when things went wrong, they can be a good employer and i repay that by comin into work.....(besides im not in the union) but i do respect and always will respect they guys on strike........Who dont i respect?...easy, the bloody fools that are fiddling with eachother while the Royal Mail burns Mr D Ward of the CWU and Mr A Crosier of the Royal Mail

i haven't had the benefit of seeing the deleted posts, but would it not of been better Anura,to simply say you feel there are no winners in this dispute.
your points are somewhat confusing, you have a loyalty to the company, yet are highly critical at the same time, despite the actions of a good employer as you put it?
the majority of people however deluded, have decided enoughs enough, those office workers will not of had that choice, they will have been told to go there for operational reasons.
you appear to be speaking up for your colleagues, yet not supporting them,i'm not having a go,just saying i really don't know what your point is?

My point is the way that office staffs attitude to the stike, they thort it was all good fun, no respect at all, and to be honest they just get in the way. Royal Mail has looked after me due to health reasons, if i had worked anywhere else i would have been out on my ear, but that doesnt mean i have to agree with everything they do and the way they treat others. Yes i support the guys but not being a union member then i dont have the right to strike, i havnt been balloted. I agree with you totally that there are no winners, something i was trying to get over in my last sentance in the op.

I am still a bit confused to be honest. I think I see where your coming from supporting your colleagues and condemning the managers for ridiculing them, yes? :hmmmm

The thing is that these very managers are looking upon YOU in the same light and will treat you accordingly.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Factually incorrect, you do not need to take part in the ballot to be allowed to strike as Non union members do not vote in the ballot.

Just to clarify this page from the GOVERNMENT says you have the right to strike even if not a Union member and it is a properly constituted Official Industrial dispute.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/ ... /DG_179248" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Industrial action by workers who are not trade union members

If you take part in industrial action when you are not a trade union member you are normally treated as taking part in unofficial action. This means that if you are dismissed while taking part in the action you normally have no right to complain of unfair dismissal.

You can still claim if the reason for your dismissal was automatically unfair.

You are treated as taking part in official action if both:

* members of a trade union are taking part in it
* the action is official industrial action taken by their trade union

This means that the law treats you in the same way as it treats trade union members. Your rights if you are dismissed depend on whether the industrial action is protected or unprotected and when you are dismissed.
Therefore you do have the right to strike, you just are not exercising that right. Your choice in the end.

Anura very sorry to here your confused set of circumstances really I am on what level of ill health you dont deserve it what ever the problem is, I hope your on the mend.
But lets be sure of one thing here The Royal Mail only looked after you beacuse of there legal obligation to do so which they are fighting tooth and bloody nail to destroy.
If they can get away with it and they will keep trying, your right to remain employed whilst being sick will be a thing of the past see how loyal they are then.
Its using the conduct code system that has been a hard fought battle that has kept your job, no doubt by some one on a picket line.
So dont go on justfying crossing a picket by the old keep my customer happy line or im not in the union.
The fact is if you like it or not the union is the very core you still have a job, not because your lino or ROYAL MAIL have a loyalty to you because your poorly.
Im not mallace and would do anything to support a colleague or a manager that is ill.
Even if it ment striking. !!!
