We should in hindsight have agreed to Mandelson's proposed 30% privatisation. It would have plugged the pension fund deficit without actually resulting in privatisation, because TNT & DHL wouldn't be interested unless they get a controlling stake of 51% or more. As it is, the Conservatives will win the next election, and even if it's a hung parliament, the LibDems will vote with them on FULL privatisation.

Which was entirely predictable, and why agreeing to the proposal would have cost us nothing. Imagine Mandy's humiliation when he got his cherished bill through and then couldn't find a buyer We would have had the pension deficit repaired as part of the same bill, but now...

In response to your two points - first, two pertinant film quotes "A person is smart, people are dumb, panicky animals, and you know it." & "Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity." Second, it is widely belived that the privatisation bill failed because backbench Labour MPs figured they could hope to avoid the slaughter & get another 5 years on the gravy train, if they voted to save RM - w*nkers!

There is something on this whole part-privatisation thing that doesn't make sense to me.
Mandy wanted £3 billion for 30% share and the government would have take on the £10-£20 billion pension deficit. Leaving the government £7 - £17 billion down with a minimum of 30% less income from RM every year.
Surely in these 'trying' times it would make more sense to not privatise RM,keeping the £10 - £20 billion that they would use to plug the pension deficit (which may not be fair to RM boo hoo), yes they would lose the initial £3 billion investment from TNT but they would also have 100% of any profits from RM. The only reason for part privatisation is if there are some compromising photos of Mandy and Brown which were posted with TNT

With all due respect, pinstripe, what is it about this Govt. ( with hindsight the last 12.5 years of Govt ) that suggests financial stability or sense, other than 3 million RPM of spin?
