time off for funeral

hi all,
Im on 1 week annual leave at the moment, it's due to finish this weekend but after a long illness my father in law passed away on monday, he's due to be buried next monday 2nd nov.

How much leave & what type am i entitled to for this please??..

Sorry to hear about your loss. As a general rule, you should receive one day' paid special leave to attend the funeral, there is movement on this if you have made funeral arrangements.

I would certainly be asking for more than 1 days special leave. You are allowed upto 5 days special leave as specified in the way forward if you are helping with funeral arrangements etc.

You would be entitled to 5 days paid special leave if it was for the death of immediate family,
ie spouse, parents, siblings or children, and you were dealing with making the funeral arrangements.
As it is your father in law, it will probably be discretionary, though you might get it if you are making
the funeral arrangements for your wife. Otherwise you will probably only get one day for the funeral.

as baldrick said, its only for immediate family so its up to your DOM weather he grants you paid leave on this 1 im afraid.

i thought as much, 1 day !!! nowhere near enough, i'll talk it over with the misses then decide if i want to take this course, (her mum lives nearly 200 miles away so not exactly close for 1 day off etc)

If you need to travel 200 miles to the funeral you could apply for some A/L out of course,
or some unpaid Special Leave.

family, and if you are responsible for the funeral arrangements.
