Terminal decline?

Post by Eric »

When were the golden days of Royal Mail? When do you think most letters were posted? Back in the 1950s? The 1960s? Or before that? Believe it or not, according to the BBC website, the number of letters delivered peaked in 2005. Yes 2005, a time when most homes in the UK had internet connections and there were already more mobile phones than people. We all recognise that the business is evolving and the type of mail we are delivering is changing but to pronounce that the industry is on its deathbed is clearly mistaken. Don't forget that for a lot of the time since those record figures were recorded we have been in recession which has had an obvious impact.

If the industry really is in such a parlous state how stupid were the likes of UK Mail, TNT and DHL for piling in and spending so much money on plant and machinery even allowing for the guarantees and assurances they were given by the government, although that is another thread.....

It was before the government opened the market up.

Mail now is higher than it was 10 years ago. Were people putting the nails in the coffin back then? nope.
The simple truth is that this is all a part of another drive to privatise the business.

All you have to do is look at your doormat when you get in. I get just as much post as I ever have done.

Royal Mail and the government would do well to realise this when they're preparing their 'terminal decline' spin: every single one of their employees is also one of their customers.

The 61,623 people that voted 'yes' to strike action... that's not just 61,623 workers, it's 61,623 customers. Well-informed customers, that see the industry from both sides, day in, day out.

Thing is how many spam emails do you delete without opening, spam text messages you wipe from your phone BUT letters on the doormat will ALWAYS get noticed even if you chuck most of them straight in the bin. So its not a industry in decline its a growing media source which quite clearly pays and still has a future, AS DO WE. :Applause
