Weve had ours, its s**t. We get told we have to decide what holidays we want from april 2010 to april 2011, or RM will decide for us. How the f**k would anyone really know what you want in over a years time, enless youve got kids so need half terms, or have something planned. I'll be puttin down my normal 2 weeks summer hols and 1 other week and I'll decide as and when I need my hols. Im not bein told when I should be takin my hols that i work hard for to suit RM. :cfo
My hubby's holiday form had to be back with his manager by the 25th September to be sure of getting the dates we wanted!!! How many other places expect you to book time off 18 months in advance.
One thing I am a bit confused about though is on his form it states he is entitled to 22.5 days holiday a year, but since he started there 2 years ago he has never been allowed to book odd days off. If he has required a specific day off they've either re-jigged the rota to make his day off the one he wanted (he's normally spare man) or got him to swap his day off with someone else in the office. So in his time there he's only ever had 20 days off a year and carrying forward is strongly discouraged/nigh on banned.
Is this the norm in other offices or is it just his that have odd practices? i just can't get my head round why they tell them their allowance is 22.5 but only ever let them have 20.
Perfectly entitled to his 22.5 days, but normally the half day is tagged on to next years to make a full day, as it is pretty nigh on impossible on deliveries to work half day. I normally add the extra days on to the end of my hols so I dont have to come back in the next day following return from holiday.

See they don't let him do that, it's full weeks or nothing, which is a right pain when booking holidays that run saturday - saturday as obviously it falls over 2 weeks. We tried our luck with this years form and tried to tag 2 days onto a week he's booked in April but his line manager didn't seem to hopeful about it being allowed. They'll have to go jump though as we've booked the week away now and fly out on the Saturday so they'll have to at least give him that off.
Even if they do not let him tag it on to his full week, he is still entitled to those 2.5 days, so they have to find those two days sometime during the year for him to take. This seems typical of management these days to mess employees about and create friction. Best thing for him to do is when he wants his day or days off is to inform the manager that he has some personal business that urgently needs attending to and that he will be taking his holiday on those days. A week or two in advance should be satisfactory time to allow the manager to cover his walk.
