The Alternatives to posting…………

We have been repeatedly regaled with the assertion that mail volumes are dropping by ten percent per year and a few questions spring to mind each time I hear this.

What is being used as an alternative?

Is it just hearsay because it happened in another country and like our sloppy British tabloid journalism it was repeated without finding out the facts?

Why are our workloads and deliveries heavier?

What is being used as an alternative?

The massive and continuous rise in email and texting has not replaced paper mail – it is in fact an additional phenomenon. People using these methods did not communicate at all before they arrived. They, along with mobile phones are what have made us into the so called global village where everyone is instantaneously available to communicate with. The space was there to be filled and they duly complied.

Is it just hearsay because it happened in another country and like our sloppy British tabloid journalism it was repeated without finding out the facts?

Ten percent is a very convenient number – too convenient to be accurate to any degree. We would expect fluctuations in line with economic conditions but not in the face of an alternative that costs the customer quite a lot to print it out if they need to and delivered through an as yet regularly (even more than we are) disrupted service – the Internet !

Why are our workloads and deliveries heavier?

Our mail hasn't decreased but it has changed. Why are newsagents going out of business and for that matter a lot of high street business’s? Because all their catalogues travel by post and nearly all subscription magazines and goods are cheaper if ordered on the “net”. So, we don’t send a letter to order it but instead we deliver anything from 6 – 12 periodicals weighing up to 500 grams each instead of the customer going to the shop for them. Most good internet systems have spam filters built in and in the case of mine, deletes anything I have set it up to refuse. So – a lot of unwanted and to my mind, annoying junk emails never reach me. If you send it by post it gets into the house it’s addressed to and receives at least a cursory glance from the occupier – and that is why we have a huge rise in publicity material that far outweighs the items replaced by direct debits and online orders. There is no substitute for the magazine or catalogue in your hands or for the sure knowledge that news of what you want to sell will reach your customer by post – even if they only recycle it.

The asserted ten percent fall in mail volume is BULLSHIT – ask the guys who sort and deliver it every day.

Royal Mail and particularly Adam Crozier and his paymasters in the Government are too bloody lazy to get the facts because it would mean them doing some work. We have had enough of creative accountancy in this country so I will give you a very simple sum to illustrate how we feel at the moment

CWU + PUBLIC OPINION = NO LABOUR GOVERNMENT AFTER NEXT MAY

Unless of course you learn to add up properly and start dealing in the truth.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile

Why don't big mailing customers use e-mail as Royal Mail management, the media and the un-informed members of the general public keep telling us! :hmmmm
I'll tell you!
It is because most folk that have a good anti virus software just barr the SPAM!

Do they really think that a modern company would waste thousand of pounds if it didn't have to for the so called junk mail,
they have done loads of market research into cost cutting and realise that there is more chance of their message getting through by using a letter! Simples :cuppa
I know you think you know what you think I meant!
But do you really know?
