40hr working week

i would love someone to inform me where i stand legally on this matter. i am fed up being told by r.m. management that postmen/women dont work thier full contracted hours. i am a rural postman and constantaly work over my time, I have informed my lino that i am contracted for a 40hr working week and im not prepared to work over my contracted hours. the response has always been the same ie you have to be flexible,stream the mail, you musnt be up to speed ect ect, so ive had enough. ive been in this job 21 years and no one is going to tell me i cant do the job. SO here is the question, if i have worked for instance 9 or 10 hours per day for 4 days and i dont want to be paid for the overtime, this means that i have only 4 hrs or no more hours left to work on the fith working day. So what are my options, can i just work the 4 hours owed or if ive completed my contracted 40hr week take the time off to spend with my family. As i understand the law no one can make you work over your contracted hours or bully you into doing overtime, so as i have asked, if anyone can give me an alternative before this sh*t hits the fan i would be gratefull.

Keep cutting off every day, cutting off half way through day five is not really an option. I have the same issues. Manager says it can be done. It is wierd how when I keep inviting him to come with me any day he feels, or even watch me secretly, I don't even need the union involved. I know and he knows that the work rate is fine, the round is simply too big.
This problem comes from the top down, the DOMs and linos are pressured and given incentives to 'encourage' (haha) us to complete the workloads they have set for us.

Royal mail want us to work our contracted hours ive no problem with this BUT they cant have it both ways, as i have asked what are my rights, i will complete my duty daily no prob, but i WILL NOT WORK OVER MY CONTRACTED HOURS

if rm wanted us to work the hours we are paid they could fix this issuse easy by making us all return to our offices and making us work to our ime the problem they have is they have created this mess with the job and finnish which in turn made people take cars on delivery and now rm would nt have enough seats in the vans for all the staff so royal mail want thier cake and eat it as well by allowing this to happen :cfo

well they call it flexability.swings and roundsbout you can go home once youve worked all your hours.
its been said time and again by many royal mail press officers in a great many papers.we only want you to work the hours we pay you for.if you go over one day you can go home earlier later in the week

Overtime is voluntary, so RM cannot force anyone to work beyond their contracted hours. If you choose to work beyond your contracted hours you are entitled to be paid overtime.

The 2007-2009 Agreement does not allow provision for annualised hours or the banking of hours as Phase 4 is unagreed. Neither does the Agreement allow for the movement of hours, excepting where offices work long/short days as part of their weekly hours, flexibly or otherwise. It is only in exceptional circumstances (traffic or weather related) that RM can ask you to be flexible. And that does not include provision for backlogged mail due to strike action.

if you want to use flexiblity in your favour then if you work over your time during the week when you report back to the office record the time down and bring it to a managers attention and inform them you will be taking the time back. Make sure they aknowledge it or they will deny it come saturday.

In my opinion cut off everyday if you cant complete on time, its people who work over their time that help them out and think they job can be done when it cant.

UPDATE Went into office this morning,mail was heavy,the dom stopped the ips at 07-15 to try and get the boys & girls out on delivery. So i made the decision to tell her that because of the amount of mail i would not be able to complete my duty. Again the normal response, stream the mail, be flexibale, bla bla bla. Stood my ground and again said i would not be workin over my finish time so i was then informed that my duty will be tested next week. At last i got the response i wanted. I then proceded to tie off my run leaving about 1& 1/2 to 2 hrs work in the frame. Cant wait for the test to begin because i fully intend to follow all the propper ways to deliver my mail as set out by r.m. management and esp the i.b. for example. SEAT BELT ON AT ALL TIMES, SECURE YOUR VAN AT ALL TIMES, NO MAIL IN THE FRONT OF THE VAN WORK FROM THE BACK OF IT. KEEP TO THE SPEED LIMITS. TAKE MY FULL MEAL BREAK. It will be interesting to see what response i get when after going thru all these proper working practices that my duty is over by at least 2 hours per day. Mabe then they will have a big question to answer. THIS BIG LIE THEY KEEP PUSHING TO THE PRESS THAT WE DONT WORK OUR CONTRACTED HOURS IS IN MY HUMBLE OPINION GOING TO COME BACK AND KICK THEM RIGHT UP THE ASS.

PS IT DID TAKE ME UNTILL MY FINISHING TIME TO COMPLETE MY ROUND TODAY AFTER LEAVING 2HOURS WORK IN THE FRAME, JUST FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE INTERESTED.

They don't want you to return to the office - because you won't find any managers there - they went home when you went out .
