I really do believe that most DOMs and assistant DOMs, are totally incapable of understanding this basic premise, that senior executives will not tolerate a situation where there are managers managing nobody, because more savage cuts in the workforce will surely see a few lower management positions become quite pointless.

Just look at how many "managers" are in your office? we had 7 on thursday. standing at the end of the ips. scratching thier heads, pushing yorks around and drinking coffee.

a few saturdays ago we had a shortage of managers, we only had 2 in the office. the office run so smooth, with no headless chickens running about pressuring people and stressing out. just shows you.

A significant number of managers are, quite frankly, a waste of space and money. I'm surprised the top brass haven't stripped this wastage down considering how much money gets poured down the plughole. Considering there's less delivery staff in our office we seem to have the same number of managers, the sums don't add up, unless of course they need them to cover duties when there isn't enough delivery staff to cover the walks!!
The other day there were three of them stood around talking for nearly 15minutes whilst we were busy on IPS - so that's 45minutes of company time wasted on idle chit-chat... And they have the nerve to criticise us for going to the toilet, sitting down too long, not sorting at the required standard. Your time is coming dear managers, it's coming.

As for them "uniting" and joining the fight, snigger, a large number of them are just too greedy and spineless to even contemplate such a thing. And having just said that; I will quite happily and personally apologise to all managers in my office and buy them all a brew if they did join the fight... (But, I think my words and money are quite safe!)

Our office would run perfectly with only 1 manager instead of the 8 or 9 we have at the moment.

normally 2 and the DOM but sometimes 4+ DOM ....
Funnily enough our night operation over Xmas pressure last year ( the only night duties left in our office) ran perfectly smoothly with zero management. We all knew what we were doing and got on with it.
It was only when the early shif managers started rolling in and sticking their unwanted oar in, that things got messy.
We actually put it to them why they need 5 managers now over the two we had 5 yrs ago when there is supposed to be less mail... " well there's a lot more paper work to do".....

In 2007 one of our line managers refused to cross our picket. A lovely girl, liked by all of us...
She was of course , busted back down to blueshirt and sent back to her own DO.

Around 12 managers on the payroll in my office of 120 deliveries.

Thats approx 1 manager for every 10 staff.

The office could easily run with a DOM and 3-4 line managers

I smell a cull coming.

We have 5 managers, a DOM and 2 Bookroom staff yet can manage perfectly fine when there are only 2 of them. Maybe someone else would be needed part time to do the paperwork, but certainly not 5.

Higher management aren't going to put up with that situation for much longer, there's another bonus there just waiting for them.

Didn't they try and do away with line managers a couple of years ago and replace them with team leaders?Certainly the vast majority of them are useless - they are just not up to the job as the Hooper report clearly points out.I cannot see our place having any problems with fewer managers.
