It's clear that the media battleground is a big part of this dispute, and that things are moving in our favour for the time being. In my view, RM have nothing to offer but a few sound bites and that may not be enough to win the public over.

Not sure it matters what they say, they will always come out with some serious crap. So long as the message the CWU get through is strong and focused. The public will not believe what we put up with when the truth is out.

Re: General public ,backing posties
Gotta say that out on delivery on Thursday I lost count of the number of people that said "I thought you were on strike today" and "You will be on holiday tomorrow"
Both comments really peed me off and I had to bite my tongue quite a few times. Anyway, I took the time to speak to everyone of them and explained many of the reasons why we have been forced into IA.
NOT ONE PERSON I SPOKE TO BACKED ROYAL MAIL OR THE GOVERNMENT EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM WANTS RM TO REMAIN PUBLIC.
RM, Mandy and Gordon Brown can spout off as much as they like about the strike being self defeating because the public aren't buying it.
As for Kenneth Clarke advocating the selling off of RM. Carry on because all he is doing is enforcing the public view of how far out of touch with reality he and his cronies are and losing his party votes.

Re: General public ,backing posties
Talking to customers is vital to geting the message across. RM do not have that contact except through the media but that can be undermined effectively by you posties explaining exactly what is going on. We have found that the RM supporters such as they are, when they have some of the problems explained to them are far more receptive to the Union's standpoint.
Sadly, the interviews shown on BBC breakfast this morning are grossly unfair to the postal staff. After all, who in his right mind will start slagging of RM management on TV. Talk about a recipe for 'bringing the company into disrepute' and instant dismissal. An invitation to an interview which disguises the speaker would be possible.
Just a few examples of what we read on this forum could start the ball rolling in terms of getting the message over. The public just don't know or understand what 'bullying and harrassment' in RM really means and it is imperative that an opportunity to explain is somehow obtained.
In the meantime, good luck to you all.

Re: General public ,backing posties
Yesterday on delivery everyone who spoke to me said that they were a 100% behing us and were disgusted at the treatment we receive from Royal mail.
Just got back from a 5 hr stint on the picket line and the support shown by the G/P was over whelming part from one idiot that shouted s**t houses to us all.
We had a member from the socialst workers pop by who gave us his full support and also £14.53 from a collection he had orgainsed ( This will now start up our own collection fund as i intend now starting up a collection of a £1.00 a week from all in our office) THANK YOU TO THE SOCIALIST WORKERS and 4 packets of biscuits. Although i did not read it there seem to be a few good write ups on our plight in there newspaper.
So we do have the support out there we all must stayed strong and stay disiplined as were in for one hard slog.
Remember the miners when they went toe to toe with the goverment whos gone toe to toe since no one apart from us .
I think troubled times lay ahead of us but solidarity will see us all through.

Re: General public ,backing posties
Sorry guys, but this is laughable... With the best will in the world, the General Public is not RM's biggest customer.. UK Businesses are your biggest customers and believe me they are not as sympathetic as your 80 year old granny in the street. The mail media is already struggling to justify itself as a communications media in todays world. Mail volumes have crashed over recent years and are predicted to continue this downward slide.. Strike action by RM workers will only do one thing for the mail industry - push businesses towards alternative media! At it's best, your action is commercial suicide. But it's not just your jobs that are threatened, but those of many thousands of others that work in the UK mail industry. The comment on this forum that likens your action with that of the miners in the 70's is worrying... what happend to the UK mining industry guys? BTW, if RM are such bad employers - why don't you find another job - oh..... 'find another jo....' perhaps it's not that bad after all...

Re: General public ,backing posties
Shouldn't you be hard at work clearing mail rather than scanning through this site? Isn't mail clearance your priority today? No? It wasn't for our managers either who spent more time on fag breaks or watching the picket line than inside working.dmpa wrote:Sorry guys, but this is laughable... In response to your propaganda -
Are you telling our biggest customers that they will have to pay 3grand per year to get an early delivery? And how do they fell about that? It is a total scam, you are blackmailing our biggest customers who can't wait till 2pm for their post.
Mail volumes by your figures are down 7% while staffing is down 22%. If mail voil has crashed then staffing levels have nose-dived into the ground. But that's your figures and we know they are lies. How much more revenue are packets making us?
If the answer to bad empoyment terms was for everyone to 'find another job' then there would be an employers 'race to the bottom' with every post being offered on minimum wage/minimum benifits you plonker. Get back to work.

That may well be the case my friend but R/M and the goverment will be swayed by public opinion i think all of us a aware that the G/P are not our biggest customer but having them on our side is vital in this dispute.dmpa wrote:Sorry guys, but this is laughable... Correct me if i am wrong but is R/M not a PLC.
The majority of us enjoy our jobs but we dont not have to come to work and be treated like shite so its not a case of finding another job ,its about standing up to bullies or do you run away when confronted by a bully and do you think that you dont have the rite to stick up for yourself..Why should we go and look for another job when we enjoy doing what we do.
Get real my friend i would rather fight than run away to live another day. Would you run away like a scared little puppy dog tail between your legs or do you have your own morale principles that make you want to stand and fight for what you know to be rite

DMPA http://www.dmpa.co.uk/index2.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - explains a lot he needs us to deliver his mail so I can understand his anger even if I don't agree with it. He is commenting from only outside knowledge of what RM does, nit what its like on the inside and on what we are striking for. In a way I feel sorry for him that he believe Business needs and wants should over ride workers rights to tackle what they see as an injustice.
There are some out there who will always be against us no matter what.

Re: General public ,backing posties
Well, we're all part of the 'general public' as an entity, and all use RM in one way or another so we are its biggest customer. The vast majority of postal workers actually care about providing a decent service to its biggest customer, the aforementioned general public, and we're standing up against the deliberate running down of that service. It may be hard for you to understand, but profit isn't actually everything - most ordinary people just want a secure and reliable service, provided by a dedicated and motivated work-force. In my view, the ethos of 'service' in it's truest sense, is one worth fighting for.dmpa wrote:Sorry guys, but this is laughable... You should be knocking on Croziers door and asking why his reign has seen such a decline in service and staff morale.Strike action by RM workers will only do one thing for the mail industry - push businesses towards alternative media! Most likely they haven't got the foggiest idea of what they're talking about beyond some RM mouthpiece in the media.
