TO ALL POSTAL BRANCHES
Dear Colleagues
National Strike Materials
A Branch mailing will be despatched tomorrow compiling of a selection of placard posters, picket arm bands and guidelines for picket lines for use during CWU official days of action. The guidelines for picketing give an overview of the definition of picketing as per the Trade Union and Labour Relations (consolidation) Act 1992. These guidelines also touch on criminal law, general organisation, relationships with the police, demo’s and marches, other trade unions and other relevant advice for picket lines on the day. These guidelines must be communicated to any representative or member designated as picket steward.
Also available today are two sets of public leaflets, an agency leaflet and lapel stickers for branches to bulk order and pay via the branch rebate system. These items can be found on the CWU On-line ordering facility via the front page of our web site or by following the link below;
http://web1.mtivity.com/presales/cwu/login.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
All bulk orders will be sent out via Parcelforce and Branches must be aware of consignments being sent and possible alternative delivery addresses if your branch office is within a Royal Mail building. Further campaign material will be up-loaded to the on-line ordering site as and when completed.
Please find attached all PDF’s as outlined above. Any enquires regarding this LTB please should be addressed to John Colbert, Communications & Campaigns Manager on 020 8971 7244 jcolbert@cwu.org or Debby Lee on 020 8971 218 dlee@cwu.org for any issues relating to the on-line ordering service.
Yours sincerely,

Nice 1 Geezer we always seem to be last to get any of this
I'd rather have Lockheed deliver the mail than ride around in a plane built by the post office

Hi Geezer, With regard to pickets, is there a limit to how many can be present at any given time?

No mate, there is no limit to the number as long as everyone is orderly.tim64 wrote:Hi Geezer, With regard to pickets, is there a limit to how many can be present at any given time?

Is there not some law that the police can limit it to 6 if they think things could get out of hand.

Re: National Strike Materials
there is a limit of 6 official pickets but no limit to the number who can offer support.Geezer wrote:Is there not some law that the police can limit it to 6 if they think things could get out of hand.
The police can move "supporting members" if they decide you may be either causing obstruction /intimidation/violence etc

Re: National Strike Materials
There is no legal restriction on the number of people who may picket a workplace entrance or exit except that the number should not be so great that
it might cause fear or distress among those seeking to cross.

Re: National Strike Materials
While you are correct it is not a legal restriction 6 is used as a benchmark by the police and civil courts.IWW Fellow Worker wrote:There is no legal restriction on the number of people who may picket a workplace entrance or exit except that the number should not be so great that

"Large numbers on a picket line are also likely to give rise to fear and resentment amongst
those seeking to cross that picket line, even where no criminal offence is committed. They
exacerbate disputes and sour relations not only between management and employees but
between the pickets and their fellow employees. Accordingly pickets and their organisers
should ensure that in general the number of pickets does not exceed six at any
entrance to, or exit from, a workplace; frequently a smaller number will be appropriate."
