1day strike - whats the point?

Post by anTi »

Hi all,

Ive been an OPG now for nearly 6 years so this will be the 2nd national walkout ive been involved with.

I'm really pissed off with the idea of a 1 day strike. I understand the need to protect wages in this dispute but all we do is lose a days pay and mop it up when we return. This dispute im sure will be long and drawn out.

Wouldn't a 7 day strike be better?

What are all your feelings on this?

Later yes, but what the CWU did could actually be seen as a shrewd move. Look at the coverage it's getting (sadly our side is not getting across because Dave Ward gets pushed out by billy). So one day strike to stur up the hornets nest and if no meaningful talks. ALL OUT - STAY OUT!

Still, a lot of panic and hysteria and all over one (at most two) dayer strike! So nobody cares about Royal Mail then?

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

I agree a "stay out" could be very dangerous.

The chances are we will have numerous 1/2 dayers. I say we take the financial hit in one go and have a 1 week stoppage.

Tbh, the best type of action we can take is the 'Illegal' Wildcat type strike when everyone walks spontaneuously, we saw the effect it had in 2003 when the Government got on the phone to Leighton to get down there & sort it out. In my opinion the legal balloted strikes do have less impact as the company has time to plan & as you can see they have their strategy, they want these strikes.

Still what are we supposed to do ?? It acceptable for the employer to take 'Unlawful' action but not for its employees ?? The government are helping them do this, we have to be very careful. But we must stick together & battle hard.
RM & CWU Reps Opinion is 'NOT' National Agreement

One day strikes here in London have been enough to cause quite a backlog. The London Chambers of Commerce have been having a collective coronary lately.
Postal Workers don't have to lose an awful lot of money to make their point. However, if the idiots we have as bosses prove to be stubborn, we can always step up the action when it becomes necessary.
Remember, Royal Mail bosses now have about 50,000 fewer workers with which to cope with any aftermath of strike action. It gets easier for us, and harder for them.

We got a deal (albeit a poor one) when we upped the ante to 2 days in 2007.

I think were doing the right thing.

Threats are just as powerful as action and the union needs to make it clear its not afraid to intensify the dispute.

RM are bricking it. Make no mistake.

One day strikes are enough for now, what Royal Mail really fears is the prospect that anyone independant being given authority to investigate what happens in delivery offices up and down the country, the intimidation and bullying of staff who now refuse to come in early or go over they're finishing time, the mail left undelivered in delivery offices, redirections left un-done for days on end, and on and on1

Spot on!

The Unions response has been measured and fair, whereas RM are now showing their true colours as each day passes.
Sadly only those posties that fail to do the job properly will be the ones to moan about mopping up after a days IA, for those who do the job the correct way - it becomes quite comical watching headless chickens run around.
