How many will cross the line?...

The talk in our office is a lot of people will cross the picket line, at least 20 (out of 60ish) that i have spoken too have said they are coming in, various reasons were given, the usual lack of finances, no faith in Union leadership, and just pure ignorance (dont know why we are striking). I hope the rest of the country has a stronger backbone than our office or we are well and truly screwed....

I have been a postman for 20 + years and have Always supported the union in every strike.This is the first time ever in my mind to even be thinking of coming in if their is a strike.
To me this job is dead, it is a job I no longer enjoy AND DREAD THE SOUND OF THE ALARM AT 5 AM.As a grown man I get the same feelings we all had on a Sunday night as kids knowing Monday was back to school.
I know i have no Interest in working for this company anymore, and come next April plan to hand my notice in, and live abroad
My dilemma is to break a strike for the first time ever , because whatever happens most of what comes in the future months will not effect me....

Or stick to my principles ,because if we lose this fight the job will not be worth sh#T, well even less than it is now.
and part of me is thinking of the rest of you guys that are left.
This is a serous posting, and do not know what to do... my heart says stick to my principles, but my head says where i plan to be ( 400 pounds lost in wages) ,,,,based on the last strike, is over 3 months of living where I want to live next year.


sorry but I am 55 - 45 %. for the first time ever of doing this for myself.

Stick to your principles. You will forget the amount of money you may lose, but you will never be able to live with your conscience if you do not stand up for what you believe in. looks like I am the only one going to strike in my small sub office. Can I afford it. No. Does my wife want me to strike. No. But by heck, I have to look at my face in the mirror in the mornings and to think that I have not done all I can to stop this stupid management crusade to destroy this industry, would be to great a burden to bear. I have no gripe to bear with those who do not strike. They must examine their own conscience after all this has passed. I just hope I do not hear any wingeing from them when RM really starts tearing the job apart next year, should we fail to win this war.

Im in a London DO and around 15% have broke the strike. I think nearly all of them have done it from the first one (had around 14 now) Fair play to the rest of the boys who have all held firm because these strike breakers have exclusively got overtime to help clear our office.Without their help our office would have been like many others in my area "up to the roof in backlog"

Don't want to tar everyone with the same brush, but the ones that say they are going in tend to be part time and are partners of a main earner.
They say they can't afford not to come in, which in other words means they might not be able to go on another holiday this year or swap their car.

This is a fascinating topic,because i have just posted on another thread,that many are
as fed up with the CWU as they are with the union,and i believe the ballot result reflects
this, as many had expected it to be much closer.
However,what people say and actually do,are entirely different,it's one thing to not vote
for industrial action,but crossing the picket line,is a choice however difficult, will not be so
easily forgotten,not only by yourself but your colleagues/friends.

I don't know how many will cross the line but there will be some in my office, there was last time - our pickets last time were a little hit and miss but this time we are already getting organised, and there will be a lot tougher attitude to strike breakers this time.

My worry is and has been for some time that there are so many more part timers since 2007 and many of them are not members of the union that there could well be 25ish crossing the line out of 150 - it may not seem a lot but it will be enough to man the callers office for 11 hours and clear the Specials and Tracked items.

First of all u must ask yourself ,is what the union saying true .Pay - we have had a pay freeze because post office say they cant afford one , yet they make a 360 mill profit , managers share a 10 mill bonus amongst themselves that adds up .Then we have the bullying by managers which i think affects most posties how post office are bringing in all year lapsing without the union aggreing IT WAS FORCED IN .So yes we lose a days pay ,but if you dont agree with whats happening then u shouldnt cross line .IT gets my goat when a postie is crying about managers bullying ,pay freezes etc on shop floor then when they are asked to sacrifice a days pay they run away .Its just aswell the brave men from the wars idnt take that attitude ,they knew they would be sacrificing there lives ,but they knew what was happening was wrong BUT THEY STILL SACRIFICED what they believed in .So are you going over the trenches with your mates or running the other way !!!

The first one will be fairly solid but I dont think a lot of people will go longer than that. The timing is wrong and we cant expect much sympathy at the moment. A lot of people feel its really all about Ward and his London reps and wonder why everyone is being dragged into this - what I think will happen is that after a few days of strikes a deal will be done that looks very like the one done in 2007 - on the TV both sides have been saying they are sticking to the 2007 agreement and therefore theres every chance that the agreement this time will be along similar lines. And you cant blame members for wondering whether thats really worth losing a lot of pay over?

I'll not be crossing any picket line but I'm sure the usual suspects will go in but because of the way everyone has been treated over the past 2 years, I'd expect less to cross this time than last.
