A piece from the Daily Express today: "Customers may have to collect their own post from centralised offices if the Royal Mail is fully privatised, a former postal worker has predicted. Rural areas in particular would suffer."
Im sure Ive heard this before but without the mention of being privatised, that means theyll be wanting rid of more staff. Youd think customers would be a bit worried about this and be a bit more on our side if they have to get of their own arses to go for a drive or get a bus so they can pick their own mail up :cfo :cfo
Not sure you can compare the two. A trip to the DO would be a one stop action, a trip to the shop to buy something involves far more reasons. And again, even with shopping more and more people can't be arsed to even do that and get it delivered.
The future involves everything being delivered to you so going out to pick up some junk mail (just in case something important is actually waiting for you) would not go down well at all with the public.

Fair point, just thought I would chuck it in and see what people thought.
they have loads of them in Australia and New Zealand, I remember going to Alice Springs and the central Post Office had a wall of private boxes, covering a lot of the outside and the inside of the Post Office, similar in New Zealand, of course in the denser parts there are door to door deliveries, outside vitually none.

Funny you should say that. Many years ago i was being tested on a rural delivery by a quite high up manager. On the way around we were chatting about the way Royal Mail was going, he said one of the things they were looking at was to possibly franchise the rural deliveries out, he explained this would involve everything being dropped out to a central point i.e a post office (we still had rural post offices then) and then the people in that village would either have to come and collect their post or pay for someone to deliver it to them, very much as they do with their papers, milk etc.He went on to explain that the person who had bought the franchise would have to own there own van/car to deliver the mail and would be responsible for covering there own holiday/ sickness, and would basically be self employed, saving the Royal Mail thousands in pension and transport costs alone. This never happened thankfully but whats to say they,re not looking at similar things now?
THEY ARE!!! You must remember the Tories will be in this time next year FACT and FULL privatisation of Royal Mail is top of their agenda FACT especailly if we strike (or not come to that).. Thats exactly how a private company will run its buisiness end of!! I hate to say this but a strike is the best way for a government to justify this route of action... THEY JUST LOVE UNIONS.. A great tool to get what they want!! Shafted ass comes to mind what ever you do..
