What modernisation actually means.
I had a meeting with a very senior Royal Mail manager yesterday.
At the end we got chatting about the strikes etc.
I asked him why it was so imperative to the management to get us working later and later. Here is what he said:
Because a lot of the nights will go at the MC's, the mail will now get to the DO's by about 9.30am. Most will be walk sequenced. As this is the case it will only take 1 1/2 hours to throw your walk off and bag it up. Therefore it will not be necessary to start work until 8.30 at the earliest. You will then go out with your chosen partner from work, in a small van (I can't remember what they are called but they are like a smart car/van). The two of you will then deliver two walks and all the packets, big and small. You come back have your meal relief. You then go out in the afternoon and do a collection. Finishing at 5.30pm to 6.00pm One of you is allowed to drive the van home and drop your mate off if he wishes.
Who's to blame for this, he said the CWU. Because of their aggressive insistence on lowering bag weights and highlighting working conditions. So between you, you can do two walks and not carry too much weight.
So, there is the plan my friends. 9 -6 or 8.30 - 5.30. No packet drivers and no afternoon collection drivers. There are your job losses.

i accept that we need to become more efficient, and i even accept the logic behind the proposals, but it doesn't answer the question, why does everything need to be moved later?

9-6 or 830-530 is a 9 hour day, what happened to the shorter working week ? If that was Mon to Fri than it wouldn't be such a bad job aslond as the redundancies were volantery.

I asked that that and the suggestion was either part time contracts, or you go home for a couple of hours and then come back to do the collections. It was a general conversation but obviously a plan has been set as he was quite specific. :cfoclaretandblue wrote:9-6 or 830-530 is a 9 hour day, what happened to the shorter working week ? Re: What modernisation actually means.
my idea is simple, start the nightshift earlier, reschedule all flights- earlier, get the mail to the delivery offices - earlier, get it sorted-earlier, and get out on delivery- e-e-e-earlier, with an earlier finish chucked in fir good measure.

1 big glaring error in the senior managers words.....the CWU's insistance on smaller bag weights...this is instituted by the Health and Safety Executive nobody else, and Royal Mail are like any other business whether employing thousands of staff or a business employing just 1 person
Health&Safety is paramount in the workplace and must be adhered to

Impression I got was the Health and Safety issues have been strongly pushed forward by the CWU. My feeling is that RM have used this issue to work out a plan where there can be job cuts and more savings.hooniebagoonie wrote:1 big glaring error in the senior managers words.....the CWU's insistance on smaller bag weights...this is instituted by the Health and Safety Executive nobody else, and Royal Mail are like any other business whether employing thousands of staff or a business employing just 1 person

wouldn't work in london 2 posties using 1 van. huge chunks are either residents only parking or some other sort of parking restrictions.

RM cannot dodge Health and Safety issues, however much they may like too.
Any version of 'modernisation' that comes from RM pays mere lip-service to the word .. no-one can seriously doubt that RM have no interest in modernisation per se, their motivation is profit-based, pure and simple. And that modernisation will come at the expense of RM employees and impact on the service to customers at both ends of the spectrum.
RM has been starved of much-needed funding and resources for many, many years. Past and present governments have looked at, attempted and failed to privatise RM and the postal industry for any number of reasons.
Look at the current directors etc that we have ... see if you can find any background information on them (resourcing on the net, etc) that gives you confidence for the future of RM in their hands. What we have seen happen at RM with the present crop does not fill me with a great deal of hope that is for sure.

Re: What modernisation actually means.
This would seem the 'common sense' way to go.....have often thought "if they can move all flights,artics...etc later , then they can surely move it earlier too". Being 1st at the customers/business's door in the morning was 'our thing' and a big selling point for the company also...!! But you know where using common sense in this company gets you....shimmyrule wrote:my idea is simple, start the nightshift earlier, reschedule all flights- earlier, get the mail to the delivery offices - earlier, get it sorted-earlier, and get out on delivery- e-e-e-earlier, with an earlier finish chucked in fir good measure.

Re: What modernisation actually means.
apparently you can park a Royal Mail van anywhere as long as you are delivering from it (exceptions being zebra/pelican crossings or yellow box junctions) red or yellow lines either double or single are allowed.....you may still be given a ticket by an over zealous traffic enforcement officer (future R.M manager)but they are cancelled as the Royal part of the company insisgnia overides the ticketkwikpost wrote:wouldn't work in london 2 posties using 1 van. huge chunks are either residents only parking or some other sort of parking restrictions.
