why one day?
Can anyone explain why we bother with these one day strikes is it 4 us or the public ie we get some money each week they (the public)get a delivery so they aint to pissed off.
surely with the result thats just been returned shouldnt we hit hard while we have the momentum.Had this debate in our office to day and the general feeling is if were gonna strike lets go for it ,stay out until matters resolved . Were pretty sure this would bring an earliier end to the dispute.

totally agree, go out and stay out, stop messing about with odd days etc, build the pressure up and end it quicker, hopefully

Re: why one day?
i agree but in our office we can get a 100% out on a one or two day,
however i have already been told that alot of members could not afford to do an all outer.
At the end of the day if people are risking their houses and families are being affected hard they will drift back to work.

I think it's a combination of many things. Also how would you cope with no pay for a whole week?
Customers that may be on your side now would turn pretty fast if they were without mail for a whole week.
I'm not 100% sure if there's any legal issues with strikes and length of strikes.
Also having strikes for one day all over the place at different times, aparently, causes more hassle.

Re: why one day?
No i cant afford one day let alone a week ,but surely we all want this over as uick as possiible,id rather lose maybe a week than a long and protracted dispute that could go on for months resultng in losing awhole lot more pay.And what could cause more disruption than closing the whole network down, feel we really need to strike hard while the irons hot so to speakvenger wrote:I think it's a combination of many things. Re: why one day?
Apart from the cost to union members it causes far more disruption if you do 1 day then go back because by the time you get the ball running the next strike comes on again,it's also worth remembering that our people that have already taken action already are causing a massive headache for the bussiness as they are sending in managers from all over at great cost and to be honest what use are they, they were crap as posties and they are pretty crap as managers, but our people have lost money already and they are prepared to carry on so the loss should be kept to a minimum.

I don't know. I actually had to get another job to pay for the 2003 all-out wildcat strikes in London (ok- boo hoo, it was only for a few months.) On the other hand, that was the strike that really seemed to put the fear of God into management. So yeah, all-out would probably be more effective. It's a question about how long we could hold it for.

Re: why one day?
I thought the rolling strike strategy worked last time, it was an effective stoppage per section yet only one day pay each and the effects lasted for days, it affected every part of the Network whenever it happened, we had them down last time.
This time the CWU better get it right, no let off until we get a deal we all approve and given enough time to read through it.

Re: why one day?
The union meeting we had where a high ranking union official turned up was asked the very same question and replied "it will definately be more than one dayers this time" I think because of the bad feeling and the way royal mail interpreted the way forward agreement.
Any married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing.

Re: why one day?
I agree ,we lost only a few days last time and the effect of rolling action was just about to bite . Effectively the massive backlog would have choked the system even on working days ,thats why RM caved in,thats why there is EA now. Not saying that there were no problems with the tactic but we should be better prepared this time, more communication ,more effective.NWpostie wrote:I thought the rolling strike strategy worked last time, it was an effective stoppage per section yet only one day pay each and the effects lasted for days, it affected every part of the Network whenever it happened, we had them down last time.

One added benefit of rolling action this time is that given the growth of the bullying culture and the forced changes, it would certainly put the pressure on those offices and individuals who have failed to do the job properly, they might have to get their heads out of the sand.
RM know that an all out could not be sustained indefinitely ,we don't really want to get into a starve them into defeat situation. Rolling action is modernisation

Re: why one day?
boys and girls come on, we have to look at it realistically, the good old days of all out till its fixed are well gone.
The union need to do it intelligently, there are 2 and a half million unemployed, do you really think if we go 'all out' those dirty bastards wont be straight down the job centre rolling up every dosser and migrant workers to get the work done. They will pay them even less than us, so will make there sacred savings, and to top it of those same people will come round to our houses with P-45's in hand.
This needs to be an escalation, offices that arent already doing so, work to rule, those already in dispute need support from the union to keep it up, we can win this but only with a good strategy.
My personal favourite that ive heard is send out those that cant be easily replaced, i.e mailcentre workers, keep the rest of us in work sitting around while being paid, however the reps come round with a bucket to surpport the strikers (i know full well at least 50% of my office would make up the days lost by strikes and thats just my office)
See how quick they would fold when they havent got the money to get other offices to scab and they will still have to pay 80% of the workforce to deliver thin air. (just a thought please dont hurt me)

Re: why one day?
this potentially could get very messy.the humble posties could imo be made into public enemy nos 1 by both labour and cons with media backing to show that they are tough and to hide there own shortcomings .however we do have a few trumpcards which we need to exploit to the max.upper hierarchy gold plated pensions and royal mail bonuses .b&h of workforce with qoutes going back to leighton when he had a crusade about this.delivery times 2.pm towns and 3 pm rurals constantly going over this. later deliveries for businesses and i am certain that a big company in bristol took a whoLe page advert highlighting there concerns over royaL MAIL management.(will try to find out which company that was,)lack of engaging staff, lack of innovation, crozier not attending any meeting with cwu likewise new chairman hasnt said anything.plus the cwu should advocate a zero policy regards b&h anything out of the ordinary slap a grievance in.just to highlight the lack of dignity and respect.if we show any sign of weakness over this we will be shat on from high.
