Boxing Day

As boxing day is a saturday ive heard it on the grapevine that we will all be in working as they are classing the saturday as a normal day and monday as the bank holiday.

I take it the union are trying to arrange saturday off for us have any of you heard anythink on this matter, or will it be the case of hearing whats happening 2 weeks before hand.

If this is going to be the case i can see a lot of sick absences looming.

Postcom have it within their power to declare the Saturday a 'non-service' day, in which case we would get the day off, despite that Saturday not being the recognised public holiday. Look on any 2009 Calendar and you'll see that Monday 28th December is the official public holiday, in lieu of Boxing Day, this year.

When Princess Diana's funeral took place on a Saturday, that was declared a 'non-service' day, even though it wasn't a public holiday as such.

But with Xmas being the busiest time of the year, and a huge backlog of mail from the strikes still lying around, I doubt they'll be granting a 'non-service' day on this occasion.

last time it fell like this on a Saturday, we worked extra hours during the previous week to make up for the hours on the Saturday,

if that don't happen we could always arrange a strike day for that Saturday

Got some good news:

Exceptions to the universal service - local holidays

Postcomm has decided to allow exceptions to Royal Mail’s universal service obligation to deliver or collect mail on certain specified days. These changes take effect from October 5, 2009.

These are as follows:

* Saturday Dec 26 2009 (Boxing Day 2009) in the UK. (This is on top of the official bank holiday on Monday December 28 2009 which Royal Mail intends to observe);
* July 12 (Battle of the Boyne) in Northern Ireland if it falls on a Saturday;
* The day after the Battle of the Boyne bank holiday in Northern Ireland;
* Specified local holidays in Scotland (to be taken instead of certain official bank holidays in Scotland);
* Easter Monday in Scotland (Royal Mail will work as normal on Good Friday);
* January 1 and 2 and December 26 where they fall on Saturdays and the Secretary of State has appointed the following Monday as the official Bank Holiday in its place, the Saturday may be designated a holiday and the Monday a normal working day.

If an exception is allowed for a day which is not an officially recognised bank holiday, it means that Royal Mail will not have to meet its universal service obligations to deliver or collect mail on that day.

Royal Mail will be required to publish its bank and local holiday arrangements to ensure that senders and recipients are aware of delivery and collection services over holiday periods.

Fingers crossed post comm come through for us but i think you may well be right in saying they wont allow us.

Anyway not much will be getting done as the majority of xmas post will be done . There will no M/CS operating and whos going to sort mail with a whopping hangover i will be lying down on my fitting recovering.

Funny enough i was telling some newer staff members about this yesterday, they found it hard to believe. Me however, have never forgiven the bas***ds
