Dear Colleague,

I attended a divisional reps meeting in Newport on Monday where a national officer was present and he gave us an update of how talks were progressing.

He started off by saying that it’s early days yet, but Royal Mail has stated that in the New Year there will be “a mountain of change”; this includes a longer delivery span.

He also said that Royal Mail intend that every revision from January 2010 will be based on the following,

Town Deliveries last letter 3pm and rural deliveries 4pm (THAT’S NOT FINISHING TIME)

Quite obviously this means if we cannot achieve a shorter working week start times will be in the region of 7.30 & 8.30 and finishing times of 3.30 & 4.30pm respectively.

He didn’t say if the time would be different for Saturdays!!!

It is essential that all members are informed about this and we get fully behind any industrial action that may take place.

While there may be a mountain of change it will be done by agreement with safeguards and improved benefits for our members and not just by Royal Mail introducing it by executive action.

There is also talk of Royal Mail closing the current career earnings pension scheme and replacing it with a money purchase scheme that will worsen further your pension as all the risk will be on you and not Royal Mail.

And managers are in the same scheme and they are prepared to do nothing!!!

There's talk in my office of going 7 til 3 or 8-4 I took this job on many years ago because of the early start and no doubt so did many others. If the job is going to those times I think I'll be looking for other employment, the last thing I want to be doing in the summer is delivering in the intense heat of the afternoon and in the winter delivering in the dark.

We had 7 O'clock starts forced on us with Executive action

I hate it, I now leave the office to go on Delivery at the time i used to finish when i first started and we were on Six day Weeks.

Here's a thought after years of broken agreements and which will continue after the current dispute settles there always seems to be an acceptance from the bigwigs that one or two days IA always brings about a negotiated settlement and is recommended to the masses to accept, i do not believe most people understand or stop to think how it will be in the future or the gravity of the situation we the workers find ourselves in. If its a big YES vote most people want action right away undestandably so, but there could be a case that over the next 6 weeks the CWU and RM sit down come to an agreement on a range of issues not least industrial relations which is non exsistant at the moment,future direction of the company,etc.

Furthermore the CWU must encourage,Reps,Officers,etc to help and support its part-time staff(not all) to adopt the same principles of the workers gone before them and where RM is driving change rapidlly and to a part-time predominant workforce which will only speed up the dimise of the CWU,thus this being the last fight as i see the CWU must be ready for all options no matter how bitter and adopt a major media drive to the public and buisness community that its all or nothing in talks and a with a strategy where all objectives are met to an acceptable watertight agreement/conclusion.Also make aware to RM (crystal clear) that if there is no forthcomming agreement by the 1st of December then as of this date we are on continuous Industrial action from then on,its the only way might not sit well with some people but you will have no options left the pressure would be unbearable for the company.This is no time unfortunately to think from a public perspective as you will never please everybody,the goverment's intention is to destroy the service ready for privatisation and the terms and conditions of workers.

Does Royal Mail have the right to change the USO which at the moment states 2pm finishing in Town areas and 3pm in rural areas. I know thats a joke as most posties can now be seen on the streets to god knows what time. The point is can they change without agreement by the regulator.

They POSTCON do as their masters tell them and as mandy :mfo has not had his way with us as he wanted too we are up the Swanee with out a paddle on this one!. Let us all tell the thieves and corrupt and downright bent to go forth and multiply by a factor of 10!.

Two of my Divisional Reps were at a Royal Mail briefing on the planned introduction of Walk Sequencing Machines in September, to hear what they had to say.

They were told that the delivery specification was going to change to 3pm last letter for town, and 4pm last letter for rural deliveries.

Royal Mail made it quite clear that this included Saturdays.

They also stated that as far as they were concerned this was just going to happen.

We have to make sure every member on deliveries gets to know their plans.

And we have to make sure that CWU HQ don't sell us all down the drain with some crap deal on Saturdays.

We are truly in for the fight of our lives this time.
