In their submission to the Hooper report Royal Mail claimed they had 229,000 employees in 2002. By the same measure, this had fallen to 178,430 in 2009. This is a loss of over 50,000 and constitutes a 22% decline.

In its 2002 annual report and accounts Royal Mail reported it was delivering 81m letters a day. In its 2009 Report and Accounts it said it was delivering 75 million letters a day. This is a decline of 7.4%.

In 7 years staffing levels have fallen 22% while the number of items Royal Mail reports it delivers every day has fallen 7.4%

Bear in mind that we also have a larger percentage of part timers. So say we have lost 22% of our staff, with so many duties going part time as well we must have lost more like 35% of the hours.

Sorry to ask, but when they say letters are down, surely parcels are up? I have delivered more packets/parcels etc than ever this year. Ebay, amazon, marks etc.

Somebody told me the postal workforce is 122,000? Is this correct too? :mfo

I saw a flyer from the CWU, on the back was a graph showing a 30% decline in the number of delivery posties since 1998, and an increase in the amount of mail each delivers, up from an average of 98,000 items per year in 1998 to 130,000 items now.
As the Union says, there is no point banging on about a 10% decline in mail volumes when the staff delivering these volumes has decreased by three times as much.
Still at least we were right when we said we are delivering more mail than before.

For 2007/2008 the Royal Mail Letters end of year head count was 164,995 so thats 2685 less people employed in Royal Mail Letters.

As a GROUP our combined head count is down by 5071 of which 2685 came from RML.

I havent checked the figures from 2002 as I can not see head count in the annual report for that period so do not know if the figures supplied by Bob M are group or letters, however my FOI request shows that we have dropped almost 50 million OPG hours since the start of the 2004/2005 through to the end of the 2008/2009 financial years.

Now if you take that figure we are saving Royal Mail Letters around £400 million a year on wages compared to 5 and a half years ago.Then on top of that due to less staf RML will have made non wage savings such as uniform,employer Ni contributions and payslip costs etc etc

Add on to that staff savings from other grades in RML both CWU and CMA and the 56 million profit figure truly is puzzling.

Now the 2007/2008 year Royal Mail Letters made a £3 million loss and Royal Mail Letters only made £56 million profit for 2008/2009 so where the f*** has all the money gone?

RML not RM Group head count for 2006/2007 was 167,640, so thats 5 thousand less staff in 2 years just in the letters section of RMG.

176,030 is the 2004/2005 headcount figure for RM Letters

So in the four year period up to and including the 2008/2009 year RM Letters headcount dropped by 13720

The mail level claim for 2008/2009 is 75 million items to 28 million addresses and for 2004/2005 around 84 milion items of mail to 27 million addresses.

1 million more delivery points

13,720 less staff most of whom will be CWU grade and within that most will be OPG grade

And THAT'S the most important statistic for the Press IMHO: RM constantly claim a 10% drop in Mail. Yet their own figures, state that it's only dropped by 9 Million items, in the last 4 years!

Now personally: I've seen a major drop in my area (I work in Logistics). But it's only been since the Credit Crunch hit. And now we're starting to come out of it, and the signs are promising. But some areas are worse hit than others. And I realise that in many areas, there's been little, if any drop in Mail volumes.

I also realise, that there's been a big drop in the amount of Mail that people pay RM directly, to deliver. But that doesn't alter the fact, that we still need enough people to deliver the Mail. We need sufficient resources to get the job done properly. There's only so much that one person can deliver in an acceptable time frame, without risking injuries.
