Absorption

Hi i just wondered if absorption is here to stay ? do you think the cwu/strikes will make royal mail give it up ? If it doesn't im gonna get xmas out the way and then leave as its killing me !
Every single day i go over my time by at least 30 mins and thats with having no break too .
Our union rep is useless and just sits in office all time messing bout on his computer and he hasnt been out on a round in over 15 years !
I asked him about my situation and he says if i dont like job leave!

Best thing to do is do the job properly mate, they want folk like you to leave.
Take your break, every day, tell the boss your not working past finishing time, get him to agree what you take out, and relax mate, theres more to life than worrying about these assholes.Its not easy, as most of us only wish to give the public a decent service, but the business cant see it that way.

ALWAYS have someone there to corroborate your story, never trust a chargehand(gaffer)

don't leave just cut off and send the bloody lot back once you've worked to you're time.

Bundle up your own round and get it ready. Then go to your manager and just be honest telling him if you take out the lapse you will be 30 mins over.
To show willing you can offer to take it with you and TRY to get done but warn him that you will most likley will be bringing some back. Then ask him what to do.

He has a choice he either lets you leave it in the frame and use the time to finish your delivery or take it all out and cut off. If he has any sense he will tell you to leave it.

what is the official line on this? Our dom says if you take it out then you can't bring any back but "MUST" COMPLETE. Anything written down on this???

Fair enough a delivery is still recorded as a failed. We have done something similar with straight forward cut off’s whereupon you take out the cut off next morning instead of doing ips, then you start as normal.
They tried making us do the lapse before our delivery but found it easier to cover cut off’s from the single lapse walks instead of bits here and there.

I left my lapse in its frame today as did many others (not enough time) and simply did my own walk.

You only have to work your contracted hours so as long as your not taking the Michael and finishing an hour early on other days of the week thats all they can ask. Simply tell your manager you do not have sufficient capacity to complete you own delivery and the lapse.

TBH that makes little or no sense - what if the driver is late, (stopped by police, breakdown etc), or you run into difficulties early on in the duty which means you cannot complete such as being attacked, suffering illness (happened to me once).

If however, he means you take out only what you think you can do with no problems being encountered and gives you a contact number if you run into problems beyond that then thats what we do.

Yes have said myself that it must be easier to cover 1 walk rather than lots of cut offs but lets face it, it is planned to fail!!

Check Conduct Code Appendix 3 (i think) for the correct procedure if you don't think you will be able to complete

People , do not be intimiated into working over your time, you only have to work 8 hours which is what you are paid, we need to prove to the managers that the workload they give us is unreasonable in many cases. By working over your time they will just let you do it everyday untill you stand up for yourself and cut off. I refuse to work over my time. If you are not making any time then why the hell dont you do the job properly and have a meal relief, you will find you can work more relaxed by working to royal mail standards. Dont worry yourself sick, just do you bag weights properly have a nice 40min meal break then go out on your duty till 2:15 then whatevers left bring back.

Our managers are so determined that lapsing carries on that this week, to involve everyone, they lapsed two walks on thursday and friday only between 42 staff over the two days. I ended up with 13 addresses in the opposite direction to my delivery route which took me longer to get to than it took to deliver and almost as long to get back - and I booked 45 minutes extended delivery, and they call it modernisation and efficiency saving arf arf arf - If I hadn't had to do it I would probably have let them off with doing a few minutes over but I reckon stupidity should get it's just reward. The funny thing is that a part timer came in at 09:30 under the impression that he was covering the walk - which would have been much more cost effective - heaven only knows what money wasting duty he ended up with.

For the offices that do the job properley and do not use their car,what must the public think about all these postman and big red vans riding around in a smal area,

today whilst i was waiting for my to pick me up after doing absorbsion 3 other vans passed me within minuites of each other.

Doing a few houses dont normaly take very long as long as they are all nr each other and not in different roads,its the distance from the office and distance to your walk,seems to me like all RM managers want to see is a handfull of houses so cant take long so what is the problem ?

Also forgot RM is meant to be a green Company and worried about carbot foot print.How sending lots of vans to 1 small area help carbon footprint?
