New starters using cars before Insurance checks have been...
Done my best to try and get 3 new starters to not use their cars but it has fallen on deaf ears and they have not filled in their forms to join the union.
Not got a problem with them not joining the cwu but got them all together and introduced myself and told them of the problems that occur when people use their own cars and the need to get buisness use on their insurance. They seemed to take everything on board but are still using their cars.
Have spoke to the DOM and said he will look into it but I know for a fact that everybodys document checks have not been done for @least 16 months and a lot of people have not got the insurance cover.
What steps should I take to rectify the situation

It would be helpful if you indicated in which official capacity you are approaching them under i.e. safety rep, IR Rep?

Make the people concerned aware of the risks of using their own cars without insurance, a hefty fine and 6 points on their licence plus car being impounded, that's all you can do really it's about making people realise just how costly it can be if they are caught.
Also make the DOM aware he has a duty of care for his staff and that if he lets people use cars without checking their document's are valid and they drive out and kill someone he will be in very deep s**t and so will they.
The Royal Mail insurance by the way ain't worth the paper it's written on so dont be fobbed off with that.

I know it may go against your morals but you could always contact the police and let them know that people potentially are driving without the proper insurance.

the dim isn't doing his job properly by letting people carry mail without the correct insurance. let him know in writing that if nothing is done in 7 days ? that you will be informing h+s or whoever you think could ensure that his balls are squeezed.

Just lodge a disagreement with the manager in writing (give him a copy to forward to his boss, and you forward one to the CWU area rep)
he then has to arange a meeting between you, the area CWU rep, himself and the sector manager from RM in order to discuss the matter.
health and safety or what ever grounds you want

I'm not defending the use of cars, but why do they need business insurance? As long as they inform their insurer, and send them a copy of Royal Mails letter they should be OK, surely? (Assuming DOM has done his part ie checks etc).when people use their own cars and the need to get buisness use on their insurance

Because even if the RM insurance actually covers you then it only covers the third party and they won't cover any break in damage to your car, get the correct insurance from your insurer and you'll know that you are covered.NewPostieUK wrote:I'm not defending the use of cars, but why do they need business insurance? Because you won't be covered on your own domestic policy, read through it and it'll say 'Social, domestic and travelling to your principle place of work' but if you want to drive for RM and pick up the costs with it then by all means just do it.NewPostieUK wrote:The Royal Mail covers the third party, your own insurance will cover you, so why the business insurance?disgruntledpostie1 wrote:Because even if the RM insurance actually covers you then it only covers the third party and they won't cover any break in damage to your car, get the correct insurance from your insurer and you'll know that you are covered.NewPostieUK wrote:I'm not defending the use of cars, but why do they need business insurance? I thought that was the point of the letter that Royal Mail gives you. You send the letter to your insurance company, and if they OK it, you'll be covered traveling to your walk as well as social domestic etc.

No, you just need to officially declare, that during your working hours, you're covered by the Bond AND NOT your own Insurance. I'm not sure of the specifics. But it's a legal technicality, that they're dealing with. Hopefully, someone else will be able to explain exactly how this works.
