Hello,

Does anyone have any opinions on the equipment you’re given to help you deliver the post?

I’m currently working on the final project of my university degree and trying to design something to help improve the postal system and work of postmen. This is the big one that’ll decide if I’ve wasted the 3 yrs of tuition fees, so any information you can give me would be of great help.
I’ve been reading some of the previous posts in past topics and learnt that the panniers on the bikes can’t be removed or locked. Is this the case? And as postal workers do you feel it would be beneficial to you for the panniers to be lockable and removable in order to help you deliver the post?
What other alternatives are there to just carrying the bag? And the pro’s and con’s of these alternatives? As designing out the back pain caused by the bags is something I’m keen to look into.

Don't go down the route of designing anything for bikes, RM are getting rid of cycles.

Bikes are being phased out, we do however have a couple of alternatives to carrying the bags on our shoulders. The HCT (high capacity trolley) which is only suitable for flat area and the 'golf trolley''.I use the the golf trolley and the biggest problem is that it is poorly designed and doesn't last longer than a few weeks. The wheels fall off or the welds holding the main frame together fail. The biggest problem we as delivery posties face, with regards to equipment is that the pouches are not waterproof. No-one from the higher echelons seem to realise that rain is wet and material soaks through during our usual 3.5 hours on delivery so that by the time we reach the end, we are delivering paper mache.

Yeah, waterproof mail pouches. So simple, so obvious, so why dont we have them ?

Oh, they have many excuses, but the simple answer is they would cost too much. Or maybe it is because those who make the decisions have no 'friends' that make them.

The new pouches we got at the moment have holes in the bottom to drain out the water, thats modernisation

350 years and still no waterproof pouch

A better designed pouch bag that does not place all the weight on one shoulder, lasts longer and waterproof - also slightly larger as well.

I tell you what though anyone who can come up with an all terrain trolley that can go up and down steps, is robust enough to handle daily usage by ham fisted postman and can handle approximately 20-30kgs, but can be used on buses and public transport, is waterproof and does not look so stupid or daft that posties will use it - they will make a fortune.

One thing that could be improved with the delivery pouch is maybe a strap / velcro belt which would hold it around the waist as well as on the shoulder. Sounds weird but it may stop the pouch swinging off your shoulder and half throttling yourself when you bend for a low letter box.

Are you able to design 75,000 Robots, one that can run and deliver mail in 4 hrs. And carry big packets. If you can your onto a winner.
Although make sure they are designed to go on strike too

i wondered what all the yellow bags lying around our office were. thought people were just using them for their shopping and what not
