See below FYI, regarding Royal Mail’s Walk Sequencing plans, and their effect on our start and finish times in Deliveries.

Remember, they want Saturday to be a normal working day as well...meaning no more shorter attendances.

We attended a presentation on the above today in Leeds . There was nothing much new only roll out dates for areas in 2010 with no named locations. However as the Ballot papers are arriving you may wish to remind our members that RM are still saying that THEY WILL be moving to a 3 o'clock last letter town dels. And 4 o'clock rurals as if they stay at 2 o'clock they will need an extra 3-400 extra machines on top of the ordered 570. I am sure you will pass this info onto your reps and members.

Is the last letter time not enshrined into the USO? And if it is so how can royalmail dictate it's own obligations to the nations postal service!.

We've already been given the later start talk but nothing firm at present as we have no machines as yet, but I can't wait for the fun when they do arrive. As for USO, pass, but if needs be RM will no doubt have it changed because it's "modernisation" and "effeciency" etc and as for the public/customers - fk'em - which is the typical RM attitude, there is no "customer service" anymore, just a typical modern day greedy profit driven business that delivers mail.

As for Saturdays being a normal day, go for it dear management, take time off another day to make my Saturday longer (if they can find a day to shorten without us going over our time, that should be interesting!) Good luck to them, lol!!!!

Fact is we win this or work till 4pm 5pm 6pm or even 7pm on Saturday as everybody else does not work those hours on a Saturday!. VOTE YES

No,there is no set time for a last letter,it is merely a target set by RM themselves,
as far as i understand the only obligation is to ensure a daily delivery takes place.
As for the presentation being held in Leeds,i'm not surprised,the union seems to
have rolled over locally,infact many members are waiting for an explanation as to
why they have conceded so much locally.
If the ballot was relying on Leeds,it could not secure a yes vote,lots of apathy and
many saying why go on strike when we're doing everything anyway.
not my thoughts,simply repeating the general feeling.

In terms of rolling over, lets remember the new machinery is not opposed by the CWU.

The problem is we do not yet have phase 4 concluded :cfo :lfo to deal with the changes that will happen due to the new machinery, such as mail arriving later and taking less time to prep and their being less IPS to do.

The 2 oclock last letter for town delievries is included in the lience with post comm. However it is fair to say that post comm has played lip service to this.

Royal Mail have agreed with post comm a 3 O clock last letter in the Bristol walk sequencing trial and it is understood that they may well extend that to the trial in Gatwick.

The problem for Royal Mail is that whilst the machines are fast and accurate they still need to be cleared down 3 times as all mail has 3 passes and thats what builds the delay.

Especially as the second 40 % of mail does not clear a mail centre until 4 40 , By the time that is run through the machines and then dispactched to delivery offices it is later than the current arrivals and the furthest offices away it can be as late as 10 00. The savings target from automation is driven by one machine operator which is flawed and that a postal worker has all 100 % of mail on hand before he or she starts preping. Which drives both later starts and later finsihes.

Mostly I agree with that statement . The new sequencing machines are very accurate ,relatively few miss sorts in the sequenced mail, and you do save about 7 minutes on your daily prep.
You are however completely wrong about there being less IPS. Since the start of our trial of sequenced mail, time spent on IPS has increased by roughly 15 minutes per day. Judging by the pattern of this extra manual sorting it looks as if the new machines are very particular about what they can process . It seems that walk sorted mail is fed in and a large percentage is rejected. This previously ws. mail then turns up at the DO as mixed trays.
All in all so far this bit of modernisation has produced 8mins time cost,1 extra process ,later mail and a huge rise in miss sort volumes. Looks like the quality figures will take a nosedive,wonder if the auditors are watching

What about the time saved when A4 mail is walksorted?

The majority of our IPS time at my D.O is this type of mail.

The fifteen minutes extra on IPS is purely down to the increase in manual letters since the deployment of sequencing machines. I can't make an informed comment on any savings from A4 mech mail ,for the simple reason ,we do not and never have received any at all! So either our flat sorting machinery is permanently bust or our MC does not posses any. Which kind of makes it doubly odd that we should be a sequenced mail trial area if there already a gaping hole in our processing infrastructure. Or does it?

The MC manager for my area is very keen to walksort flats, so far the CWU have kept him at bay.

The mail centre has got a ISLM installed and to make sure it works properley, my D.O has been chosen to have our walksorted letters sequenced.

This is due next month.

Well at least you 've got some idea what to expect.
Might be worth your safety Rep keeping a log of pre and post sequencing instances of RSI/carpal tunnel syndrome/tennis elbow. Still early days at our office but I get a definite sense that cases are on the up, which suggests people are operating on the safe edge and this new development is tipping them over
