union reps in your office

Does anyone have a union rep in there office doing SOD ALL! i have 1 in mine and he is on a 40 hour contract, he goes on the sorting,but when the sorting is finished and we all go out on delivery he stays in the office (dont know what he is doing but he does not go out on a walk), then between 10:30am-11:30am i see him walking home when ive still got 2-3 hours work left, the union goes on about working to your time and doing the job properly, yet 1 of their own is taking the p!ss!!!! How can RM let him get away with this?????

no he is in monday to friday DONT work saturdays i just cant believe what is going on when 98% of us are out to or going over our time and he is strolling down the road smiling and waving to me as he is goin home

All rep positions come up for re-election every year, so if you're unhappy with him then you could always stand against him. My rep does IPS then prep then delivery plus added to that is all the union work (attending management interviews, resource meetings etc.) and TBH they could really do with being taken off deliveries to try to fit in all their work.

I am supposed to get three hours for union work a week,i get bugger all and have had resource meetings at my frame whilst throwing in because if i don't then i will be late out and back.
The reps before me were nearly always on rounds that allowed them time for union work and they were always local but as a reserve that does not happen.

Oh and as for perks,well there are none, i do not on the whole claim expenses for travel and will try to help anyone in trouble even though as per stage warnings i end up going out a couple of hours late on my round.
Mind I got a bursary last Christmas of a hundred quid which was a surprise and welcome.

Its a thankless task as i have to more often than not stand the middle ground against management and some of our more militant colleagues and end up looking like a form of management, but i enjoy it (must be mad).

I have worked for RM now for 21 years, Only intended it as a job for a year or so

I remember picking holes in what the rep did in the past and questioning his release time.

I have since stood in his shoes and belive me they are not a comfortable pair to wear, Release time being 30 mins off sorting in a small office, Maybe just prep and no delivery in a bigger office, You get more time depending on the size of your office reflecting the members you need to represent.

Its very hard belive me, managers want you at thier beck and call, members think you owe them a living and you are getting paid their dues, As someone stated above it is a thankless task, I like to think others that do the reps job as i did (Yes i gave it up due to lieing managers and workmates that blamed me for thier loss of overtime) did so to help thier workmates, I am at work as in life as genral someone that likes to try and help people and make sure they are treated in a correct manner.

It's a shame my workmates could not attend the 101s i did with DOMs, They would then realise the 9 out of 10 things i stopped, All they say was the one that got through, The one i could not stop as they were coming in 45-15 mins early, using thier cars, Taking no breaks, Taking overwhight bags etc etc.

What did i say to them when they asked "What is the union going to do about it", YOU ARE THE UNION ffs.

It's a VERY frustrating job to take on, A job and responsability you do not get paid for and get no end of abuse from managment and members alike.

To the OP, Mate please think a little before you attack your rep.

Its funny how some people knock Reps and walk around bleating about how crap some of them are, but the same people never stand for election. Its a thankless job thats time consuming in and out of work.

it is very time consuming whilst in and out of work, its also a very thankless job
only today i had to go into the office with someone who was on a formal warning, by the time i got out of the office
most were bundling up and i had not even started throwing my job off, i was last out of my office
then numerous phone calls to area reps and i pay my own mobile bill.
once home tonight i have been on my PC typing up everything that was said in this mornings meeting.

On the bright side you do get to find out everyone else's business

Union reps in my office are great. As noted,it is a very hard job to do indeed. Members should refrain from moaning at them and be thankful they have the courage to do. The union is only as strong as the members it has backing it,i think people seem to forget what a union is and believe it is there to stand up for our working conditions just for the fun of it!!.GET BEHIND THE UNION NOW IF YOU WANT A JOB WORTH DOING....
