Beer money job for young kids living at home.

At my office, as well as many others, as we all know, full time jobs are being taken over by part time jobs. The consequence is, that new jobs are being filled by young kids, living at home, doing a few hours on Royal Mail, before getting a PROPER job, and that is what RM has become. It's not a job you can bring a family up on anymore, the pride in the job has gone, and I no longer care if I deliver a special before 1 O'clock, often it's 3 O'clock, because the PT kids don't care, why should I?

Please stop demonising P/Timers...

It's not their fault, it's the fault of RM..

This is what management want at the moment, rubbing their hands with glee as we pull each other to bits..

We're all posties, we're all being rafted, whether we're full or part time, old or young.

We need to stcick together if we're goign to get a yes vote on this ballot.

A lot of part timers would like nothing more than becoming full time, I'm sure. It's really not helpful to introduce an 'us and them' scenario. What you should be doing is ensure that they join the union.

In the three London mail centres where I've been, a lot of part-timers already have full-time jobs. So it's work at the first from nine-to-five, then rush to the mail centre for another four hours. Plus, they'll do Saturday and Sunday overtime if they get it.

This isn't to say there aren't lazy part-timers. I'm one of them. But for what it's worth, some are working at 60+ hours a week, to pay a mortgage, fund a retirement or whatever.

Work to live or live to work

those people will work themselves into an early grave (or worse long term sick), they need to look at what they are spending and cut it to suit their pay packet.

I took on a part time job as that fitted with the income I needed from a job. Some jobs would have required me to work full time for same money (yes its hard work for the money) but after my 5hrs a day if I don't want OT that's it I'm home. Today for example did 50mins pressure OT on walk and was asked to do extra parcels when finished (no chance and buggered off home) 9 times out of 10 its there if I want it, I just don't.

Im a part timer , young but i love the job. Contracted to 27 hours but normally work 60 hours each week easy. I think its the guys who have been in longer that cant handle the walks and are lazy because they have had it too easy too long.

Have to disagree with that generalisation, I'm a newbie, and find the older fulltimers are the ones really keentohelp me out and being given some right s**t, One of our older guys was sent out on a bike the other day, while other younger fitter blokes stuck to their vans, where''s the sense in that ?

Lets be honest posties have had it easy for too long and now were being asked to work to our time we kick up s**t. When i first started with royal mail which was a 5 till 1 mon - fri 4 till 12 sat i was finished everyday before 10.30 no matter what walk i was on and i bet most of you guys are the same and i bet you never kicked up then

Vaild point, and i am sure some of the older posties on here will take you to task on it !!

However what is the logic in taking people like me on a 28 hr contract, giving them a walk which never in a month of Sundays can be preped and delivered in that time, and giving the guy 2hrs a week green card to complete. !! it would cost the same to give him a 30hr contract, the reason is simple, the less hours you are contracted for the cheaper it is for RM to employ you, the cheaper it will be to make you redundant, the cheaper it will be to pension you off, when in fact all the time you have been working fulltime hours, but none of them over your contracted 221/2 will count, because they will be classed as OVERTIME !!

Careful now. Im 20, started when I was 19 been in the job a year now, and still live with parents, and its centainly not the case for me. I actually like the job, its just a petty the hassle and stress you get from the DOM makes it pretty unbearable at times. Dont judge us all on what youve seen. I started on a 25 hour contract and im now full time which is a bonus for me as I never thought i`d have a chance.

Eatmy i take offence to your comment as i am long serving postie and we have never had it easy any of us regardless of whether you are F/T or P/T.
I can appreciate your view ,i take it that you havnt been in the job to long,also remember this in your own mind you have a them and us mentality there is no them and us we are all as one. Why do you have this view ,this job is and always has been hard graft so how you think F/T or long service posties have had it easy baffles me can you elaborate...

EatMyShorts has said on occasions that he gets finished at 12.00 but yet he can still work 60hours

he's just one of those agent provocateurs that comes onto this site usually around strike times.

Sorry if i offended you i was just a bit pissed off that people think part timers are lazy and dont care about the job/royal mail. I can understand that all regions are different and some have it worse than others , sorry
