I suppose it gave someone with responsibility for LGBT in the Union a bit of an opportunity to advertise their responsibilities for when there is an election. :hmmmm

Oh and moved to Union Room as not really a News Item :left: :left:

This is a classic example of the extremists who have infiltrated the CWU,and are using our hard earned money to further their own agenda.
As usual from the CWU we hear nothing about the strike ballot being delayed by a week, when our colleagues in London and many other places have been losing money in some cases for several months now,and this just epitomizes the incompetence and contempt that the union leaders hold for the membership.

I feel it is high time that the extremists are removed from this union and that the everyday men and women regain the agenda which is about protecting us in the work place from an aggressive exploitative employer and to maintain our standard of living and should not be in the business of promoting extremist politics.

"Lesbian Partners gain new rights

Lesbian couples who have children through fertility treatment can now register both their names on the birth certificate, following a change in the law.

The change, which applies to couples in England and Wales beginning fertility treatment on or after 6 April 2009, confers legal parenthood on a biological mother's female partner for the first time.

The CWU's national equality officer Linda Roy commented "this latest development is most welcome from the CWU's perspective. We have always strived to maximise rights for the LGBT community and wherever we see parity of rights with heterosexuals this can only be a good thing"."

Which one produces the sperm? This politically correct stuff has got me stumped...

While I agree, that the timing is bad. Considering that the CWU should have been concentrating on solving our current IR problems. I think that this is long overdue.

Think about it: Sperm Donors are usually annonymous. So without that ruling, the Child would have only ONE Parent's name on the Birth Certificate. And while thast doesn't have the same stigma, that it had a Century ago. It's still a good thing IMHO. Although it would be interesting to find out whether a Heterosexual couple can put both their names on the Birth Certificate, if they used a Sperm Donor to have a Child. If so, then great. If not, why not? :hmmmm

The all defining question has reared its head again, should the CWU stick purley and siomple to the industrial barganing agenda?

In fact the same is true of plenty of other big unions, the remit has extended over the years far and wide beyond the workplace.

To me this is nonsense. How can you have a person that is not biologically related to the child in question on the birth certificate? If they want to legally adopt the fine, but this is pushing it a bit no?
If biology is now redundant why not this then? All absent fathers whose ex partners are in a proven relationship should be exempt from Child support.

What next? Sperm donors paying lesbian couples child maintenance?

The CWU needs to concentrate on more pressing matters i think.

YES! I rem on here and a poster at work regarding something about columbia ffs last year or abouts.
Start a new union or organisation if you want to save the world,or at least have like the political levy where we have the option of part of our subs if we want to go to fighting for this that and the other.

Personally i want my subs to be used for working for me and my colleagues and the fights we are fighting here and now!

But then on the flip side Unions should stick together and help each other out,but what help do we get?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

As a aside I think test - tube little Sharon or Johnny has a right to go looking for his biological father when he/she is older - so a student who had knocked one off the wrist to " Pimpled Arsed Old Slappers Magazine " in a fertility clinic might get a shock when answering the door 16 - 18 years later :hmmmm

That's fair enough , I suppose but I agree that the CWU should find more pressing concerns and stop politicking .

Yes LGBT/BEM people will have issues at work related to thier LGBT/BEM status and yes the CWU should help them, which may involve interaction in the political community should the CWU start drifting off into the big wide world of LGBT/BEM issues outside the workplace such as names on birth certificates? Thats not a LGBT workplace issue its a LGBT big wide world outside of the workplace issue.
