Maternity Leave question

Hi

I understand that if I were to quit the job after returning from Maternity Leave, I would have to pay back Royal Mail the money they gave me.

So my question is: what is the minimum period of time I would need to return to work for, in order to NOT have to pay back this money?

Not returning to work

If you do not want to go back to work you should resign in the normal way, giving the notice required by your contract or the notice period that is normally given in your workplace. If you do not have a contract or nothing has been said you should give a week's notice.

Note: You do NOT have to repay any of the SMP you received.

Changing you mind about returning to work

Many women find it impossible to know before the birth how they will feel afterwards, so it is always a good idea to say you are coming back in order to keep your options open. If you decide later not to return you can resign from your job in the normal way. Your notice period can run at the same time as your maternity leave.

You do NOT have to repay any of the SMP you received.

This refers to SMP - Statutory Maternity Pay, paid by the government. This is only about 110 pounds a week after tax.

The first 18 weeks or so, Royal Mail tops this up to full pay.

We already had a girl in our office quit, and the management is seeking to reclaim this added money at a rate of something stupid like £2 a week. I heard a rumour that you need to return to work for something like 6 weeks minimum, and Royal Mail can't ask for this back.

Anyone know?

I've never heard of this before. Unless it's all changed in the last 10 years. When I had my youngest I never went back to work. Okay it wasn't RM but there was never any mention of paying anything back and I beleive all companys top your pay up as long as you have been employed by them for 2 years or more I think. RM like any other company have LEGAL obligations towards expectant mothers. I would advise a call or visit to your local citizens advice. You know most of what comes out of managers mouths is bulls**t. Good luck and congratulations.
