Never Known A job Like This

Post by haveagojoe »

Ok I,m 53 left school and went into work straight away as an apprentice chef served my time and went into various places of employment, then the thatcher years struck and I lost my job, after a while on the dole I did a assortment of jobs, labouring on building sites, driving, factory work and then I got a good job as a shot blaster with a plant hire firm who I was with for 14 years but unfortunatly I was made redundant, I then got a casual start with RM as a posty got took on as a part timer and after sdd was made up to full time, so what am I saying is that in all my time in employment I have never known such a job to change so much, its like you dread going in on a monday because you never know what is going to happen, I can honestley say that in the last 5 years this job has been so unstable its unreal. I really can't see me staying here much longer as the prospect of lugging more and more bags on my back despite the volumes going down and the uncertanty of the future day to day because it really does change on that basis, for such a large company to have such a alieneted workforce to me is so strange, ok rant over!

Totally agree in everything you say the change has been unbelievable remember when we all received over thousand pound we thought this company was the best ever. That was only to sweeten us up now its pay back time which is hurting us all very hard. Thank you

There is only one stable job in Royal Mail........... Crozier's. Guaranteed income, pay rise, bonus and pension payments. If that looks dodgy he just brings in new rules to lay more people off to guarantee his bonus. Disgusting. He is the reason your post is spot on. If he let things carry on as they are, ( I mean regular work for the workforce and healthy profit ) what would happen?..... no bonus.

This country is no run by numbers not the Labour ideal of full employment. £321 million profit........no pay rise..........pension slashed........ and Mandelson try to peddle 1/3 of RM to private buyers. A bank loses 14 billion, guaranteed bail out by us (the taxpayer), their pensions are now safeguarded by us and if we lose or job under Crozier we could lose our house to the very people we bail out. Disgusting.

The job is unstable because if it wasn t there would be no job for Crozier...... its a self fulfilling money making machine for one man and his team. :cfo

I completely agree, I have been with RM for about 6 years and they do seem to give the impression they haven't got a clue what they are doing. For a company that has been going for years its a miracle it took them so long to notice we need to 'modernise', what have the big bosses been doing other than milking the company for bonuses etc. Disgraceful. I have worked for proper employers previously and it is nice to work for a company that knows what it is doing!!

Greynut don't forget a lot of this is down to the departing :lfo too, who legged it after completely stitching us up :lfo

Whats happening in Royal Mail at the moment is management are abusing the working culture. Most staff have got heads in sand and basically just walk through the door in the morning, work like mad so that they can get out of the building, on to their walks and get done as fast as they can. And as a result RM have spotted a weakness and that weakness is YOU wanting to finish asap. So they give you more work to do and why shouldn't they, they are a business and managers are bonus driven so the more you do the better for them.

A classic example of this was last week in my office. A guy comes in 2hrs before his time, infact i start at 5:45 wed-fri and he was in before me prepping his walk, so what does the manger do after working 2hrs for nothing? he makes him prep another walk in his own duty time, so does he learn not to come in the next day? NO he's in again 2hrs before his start time and when i asked him how much time he was making and he said i got finished half an hour before my finishing time and i said yes but you've worked 2hrs for nothing this morning, it doesn't register!!! It is this kind of mentality that is killing our workforce.

Through constant cutting off for many years, i've got a decent walk, plenty of bag drops, toilets etc. We've got the same stupid people doing the lapsing, the ones who come in early and they are wondering why its them all the time.
RM won't do anything to help unless you force their hand, EVERYTIME!
CUT OFF!!!

Staff are demoralised beyond belief...management that are clueless (in the main) - not an ideal situation. What needs to happen is for decent management types to come in and transform the business, motivate and carry the staff with them.

There are managers out there who can do this, but RM is such a massive company it will takes ages to truly transform it. It has been done - NATS is a prime example, but this only happened through PPP. Royal Mail need to lead by example change their attitude, start from the top - employ 'proper' managers not tw@ts who stand their staring at you.

The above really does say it all. This happens in my office day in, day out. People come in early which then gives them the time to their lapsing. They then have the stupity to question why Joe Bloggs doesn't have to do his or her lapsing but yet they do. A phrase comes to mind 'I see dumb people'. I absolutely have to bite my tongue so I don't say anything!

the union should be on the backs of anybody starting 2 hours early because this is a health and safety issue, apart from that any body giving them 10 hours work for nothing is an absolute moron or at best an incompetent fool who cant do the job in his allocated time because he is useless.

RM shouldnt let them in the building. If they do then RM should forced to pay them. Wont take long before RM keep the door locked until start time.

btw...why dont we have clocking in/out machines? That way if you want to finish early you can, only you wont get paid.

I know we should all stand together and strike, but Jesus H. Christ, what I'm thinking tonight is 'you want me to lose money to support the kind of person who is, in effect, working an hour-and-a-half for FREE every day' ???? :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

If Royal Mail told him tomorrow that, in future, they are going to lock people out of the building until their official start time, and that he must also work from 0700-1430 for free on his rest day, he'd doubtless be running to his Rep, screaming blue murder. Does he not realise what a plonker he is ? He's giving them more than 7 hours unpaid work every week already !!! :d'oh!

RM and the union are wrong here. Nobody should start work before their time. If he has an accident or falls ill RM will say his start time is 6.00am, its nothing to do with us. I got in early one day, simply because I can t park anywhere near the office, I slipped and sprained my ankle. I called the manager and asked for him to send a van the 1/2 mile to get me as I could not walk. he refused saying he could not ask anybody to start before their time. So I walked into work, making the injury worse. When I got in I asked the manager where one of the drivers was who I know gets in early, and he said he had sent him to the garage 10 miles away to pick up a van with someone else. Its called moving the goalposts.

if a person is starting 2 hours before their time ,in effect they are giving royal mail 10 hours per week taking that over the year that is 460 hours which is 11 full time jobs.
this is a shocking figure which illustrates why we must work to our time and try and save jobs.
