Sickness contract

Post by Lenny honeyball »

Apologies for starting a thread about this, but does anyone have a copy of the sickness/stage1/2/3 contract RM has in place?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think there actually is a stage 3 any more technically. I was put on a stage 1 recently and apparently after a stage 2 it is now 'considered for dismissal'

http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 36&t=11808" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - Attendance Procedure is the main agreement.

The bit covering stages over sickness is:
Royal Mail and CWU are committed to this process which will be reviewed on an Area by Area basis. The effectiveness of this approach will be monitored at the quarterly strategic area review meeting. It is a process for reviewing trends and identifying opportunities for improvement. With employees new to Royal Mail it is important to establish quickly a clear understanding of the need to maintain appropriate standards of attendance. Attendance may be regarded as warranting formal action if an employee who is on trial has:

Stage 1: 2 absences or 7 days in a 6 month period
Stage 2: 1 absence in the next 2 months
Stage 3: 1 absence in the next 2 months
No triallist should have his/her appointment confirmed whilst under this procedure.

2. MINIMUM NATIONAL ATTENDANCE STANDARDS - EMPLOYEES NOT ON TRIAL
Employees who have successfully completed their trial period are still required to maintain a high standard of attendance. Attendance may be regarded as warranting formal action if an employee who is not on trial has:

Stage 1: 4 absences or 14 days in a 12 month period
Stage 2: 2 absences or 10 days in any 6 month period during the next 12 months
Stage 3: 2 absences or 10 days in any 6 month period during the next 12 months
In deciding whether these standards are met for employees whose trial was recently confirmed, attendance during the whole of employment is considered, not jut from the date trial is confirmed. An employee whose trial has been confirmed following an improvement to the required triallist standard will be put back to the previous stage of the Attendance Procedure but the criteria appropriate to a non-triallist will then apply.

How bizzare. I am reading my own paperwork and our procedure is thus (this was issued me in the last few weeks)

1st Stage: 4 absences or 14 days in a 12 month period.
2nd stage: a further 2 absences or a single absence of 10 days or more
Dismissal: if after a 2nd stage warning you incur a further 2 absences or single absence of 10 days or more your dismissal will be considered

Has it changed recently?

sounds like a rewording of the 3rd stage - perhaps your manager did not cut and paste it correctly.

Anyway flag it to your Branch as the Conduct Code/Absence Procedure is one of the things they should be discussing in Phase 4 so it should not have been changed.

I was told back in the '90's that Stage 3 was an RTU (Reasons To Urge). So unless we've been misinformed. It's always been the case, that if you get a Stage 3, your dismissal will be considered. So you have an Interview, where you can give your reasons to urge them, to keep you on. I had one myself in the late '90's.

There is a major difference though - the old stage 3 its says is triggered by 2 absences or 1o days in next 6 months, but the new example gives no time limit, so in theory, if this is accepted without question, you could be having an RTU 10 years or more after your last period of sickness if you were previously on a stage 2.

Does that make sense - what I have typed :hmmmm

Anyone know if having a day off through looking after your sick child, is this classed as a "sick day" and thus does this contribute to any stage 1/2/3?

how old is the child because IIRC they are certain rules and laws that take a child's age into account.

I don't think it can be used as a sick day to go towards stages ( I could be wrong ) but it could be classed as authorised depending on whether the manager lets you have it as special paid or special unpaid, or as an unauthorised absence

Surely you would have heard by now? Isn't there a maximum time in which they have to inform you?

Got called into the DOM's office on Monday and was handed a piece of paper to sign so they can contact my Dr and Specialist, I'll hand it back to them tomorrow. The DOM did say that due to holidays (both mine & the DOM's) he did have to consult someone about the delay and was told to go ahead with it even though it was AOD(1st abscence) & related to previous AOD(2nd abscence). Hope that makes some sense.
