how does 5 day weeks for reserves work?

Post by resperin »

just wondering how do 5 day weeks work, in particular for reserves. do reserves cover a different walk every day or are they able to cover the same walk. also would there be more/less requirement for as many reserves in a 5 day week? as opposed to 5 weeks, 1 off

At my gaff we have dutys that are rest day cover and they as the name suggests cover the same 5 duties each week.

The reserves - it depends on the staffing levels - ours normally cover leave so do a full duty each week. Sometimes the same walk each day, or 5 different ones. However, if we are fully manned they are used to cover cut offs etc or even go to other DOs (in duty time).

Same in my office. They mainly cover a duty for the whole week, but they rarely get a long weekend off, which isn't fair to be honest, although half of them would probably work it on ot anyway, but they should at least have the choice.

By law reserves should get a saturday off every 6 weeks like everyone else. You'll probably have to fight for it though.

It's definitely law. Well RM law anyway. They have to have a certain number a year.

Why should reserves be guaranteed to get a sat off every certain number of weeks most of us on normal duties don't get a sat off unless on holiday.

If you have an office with rotating days off then the cover guys should get roughly the same amount of Saturdays off that the duty holders do. I thinks this is covered under the fair and equal treatment directives and laws.

If however, like my DO you have fixed days off then they get the day off of the duty they are covering.

We have fixed day off's here but even so, a reserve can demand equal rights to saturday day off's, over a year, and it has to be adhered to.

Most offices realise that they you have to get saturdays off, probably mentioning you need this sat off in 3 weeks time, they will probably give you it off then, only if your manager is resonable. As i mentioned above post, you'll have to fight for sats off.
