CWU expenditure

Post by Big Daz »

Any one read the bit from Tony Kearns in the Voice this month about the need to reduce CWU expenditure?

It seems to be in direct contradiction to the recent payrise given to the post of General Secretary.

as a rep Big Daz i'd av thought you'd have a bit more savvy than to believe right wing press reports.

I'm not Billys biggest fan but I know for a fact that nobody at CWU HQ has taken a pay rise due to the issue of RM members not having one.

Threads like this don't really help anyone mate............ except Royal Mail and their negative campaigning in a bid to produce a 'no' vote

the common line is that the union has lost it's credibility after the 2007 agreements and there's enough managers on Postman Fluffy with their " master's voice " breathing down their necks spouting off stuff begging more questions than answers and riddled with contradictions .

Hey Big Daz!

If we are talking about unnecessary CWU expenditure, what about the Environmental Representatives courses???

And don't get me started on lap dancing clubs in Moscow, trips to the Phillipines, how to communicate better with members in Cyprus and the ridiculous costs incurred last thursday by the CWU in asking the chosen few, AGAIN, about what they should do........

Joking aside, we all need to be aware of 'accountability'. The jury is still very much out following the debacle of 2007 as can be seen from the current posts and topics. You have to deliver once you take on the responsibility and the pay cheque that goes with it, otherwise it is an extravagence the CWU can live without, certainly on the postal side of CWU.

There is alot more to the CWU than industrial relations thats what members do not realise, there are other positions such as the political officer, women's offier, legal/medical offier, ULR reps, the treasuer, equality officer, the branch secretary and now enviromental reps. Members that have other issues other than industrial relations issues can get in touch with the relevant reps or branch officals depending of their issues which might be a legal/medcial, equality, educational or a political issues and many members do not know these reps and branch officals are there for their everyday needs. Therefore, to say that the CWU should not waste money on a environmental representative course is wrong because some employees do have environmental issues, just because some people are not interested in environmental issues this does not mean other people are not.

Look at this way comrades

The main employers BT Group and RM Group have CSR and enviromnental policies, from doing the course which was roughly 2/3rds BT reps I learnt that the CWU has very little or none involvement in devloping those poliices. Those poliices can and will impact upon us the members so to have trained enviromental reps working alongside IR and saftey reps can make sure RM/BT meet their CSR and enviromental responsibilities (which the law of the land will increasingly toughen up) without using it as a excuse to stich us up.

Over half of all emissions come from workplaces so its vital the CWU and other unions are involved as the employer and government will make and implement policies that will impact on the workforce.

He should have a pay cut as Tk made it clear HQ have to share in the pain.

A 10% pay cut for assintant sec's upwards would do nicely.

...and how many of these extra positions do anything or are actually available for members everyday needs?

....in my branch, the one that sponsors Noel McClean, NONE OF THEM....

In some offices all extra positions are functional or active assisting members however, in some offices it is run by IR reps some taking on all roles which should not happen because there are other reps and officals to cover all issues in order to make sure members are getting the right informaton they want. I believe that all reps and officals should work together however this does not always happen, issues tend not to get passed on to other reps and this is why somes positions are not active within some offices and this is why members could miss out on valuable information which could save or cost them their job.

That's the problem with most of the positions at HQ. They deal with National Issues, so they rarely deal with the day to day realities of being a Postie. But sadly, they ARE neccessary. I had hoped, when I first heard about the Environmental Reps. That there would be Area ones. Although judging by what I've read on here. It doesn't sound likley.

I suspect that you won't agree with me about this Wranglered. But if used properly. I believe that a specialist in Environmental issues, could be a great asset, to us. For example: Something could be done, once and for all, about the use of cars on Deliveries. Just on the Environmental impact. Can you imagine the headlines, if the Emissions from all the cars on Deliveries, were included in RM's Carbon Footprint?
The potential Political impact alone, could potentially result in a total ban, on using them. :hmmmm

Then there's the Noise Polution. There's already one person on here, who has had his hearing damaged at RM. http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... ring+noise" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Although I don't think there's enough noise where I work, to put me at risk (then again, I'm not an expert). There could potentially be a number of other people, working in conditions, which could cost them their hearing. Yet, as far as I'm aware. Nothing has been done yet to protect their hearing. There is PPE on the market, which could remove the risks. :hmmmm

And that's just 2 examples, off the top of my head.
