I think the main difference is the USPS is likely to make a $15billion loss this year unlike RM who are still making a profit and the fact that they have to pay into a health insurance scheme that RM don't have to (we have the NHS which is another argument going in the States) plus they are trying to stop Saturday deliveries which would account for about 15% pay reduction.

In the past year the Postal Service has taken very aggressive cost-cutting actions, including:

* Cutting 50 million workhours;
* Halting construction of new postal facilities;
* Negotiating an agreement with the National Association of Letter Carriers that adjusts letter carrier routes to reflect diminished volume;
* Freezing salaries of all Postal Service officers and executives;
* Instituting a nationwide hiring freeze;
* Reducing authorized staffing levels at postal headquarters and area offices by at least 15 percent;
* Selling unused and under-utilized postal facilities;
* Adjusting Post Office hours to better reflect customer use; and,
* Consolidating mail processing operations.

Postal Service Continues Aggressive Steps to Cut Costs
Closing administrative offices, eliminating positions, offering early retirements

WASHINGTON — With no signs of economic recovery in sight, the U.S. Postal Service is taking bold actions in response to its ongoing financial crisis. Today the Postal Service announced it would be closing six of its 80 district offices, eliminating positions across the country and offering another early retirement opportunity. These actions are expected to save the Postal Service more than $100 million annually.

The six offices closing — located in Lake Mary, FL; North Reading, MA; Manchester, NH; Edison, NJ; Erie, PA, and Spokane, WA — house only administrative functions and will not adversely affect customer service, mail delivery, Post Office operations or ZIP Codes. The functions of these six offices will be assumed by 10 district offices within close proximity.

Additionally, administrative staff positions at the district level nationwide are being reduced by 15 percent. More than 1,400 mail processing supervisor and management positions at nearly 400 facilities around the country also are being eliminated and nearly 150,000 employees nationwide are being given the opportunity to take an early retirement.

In the past year the Postal Service has taken very aggressive cost-cutting actions, including:

* Cutting 50 million workhours;
* Halting construction of new postal facilities;
* Negotiating an agreement with the National Association of Letter Carriers that adjusts letter carrier routes to reflect diminished volume;

* Reducing authorized staffing levels at postal headquarters and area offices by at least 15 percent;
* Selling unused and under-utilized postal facilities;
* Adjusting Post Office hours to better reflect customer use; and,
* Consolidating mail processing operations.

The Postal Service is streamlining operations and improving efficiencies across the board in order to protect its ability to provide affordable, universal mail service. By modifying networks, consolidating functions and restructuring administrative and processing operations, the Postal Service is adapting to meet the evolving needs, demands and activities of its customers.

He may mean these truckers who are paid much more than we are anyway.

YRC Worldwide and its employees have traveled a rough road this year.

The Kansas-based company and its trucking units, YRC, USF Holland and New Penn, have been hit hard by weakness in the freight industry. At the start of this year, Teamsters-represented workers at YRC Worldwide’s companies approved a 10 percent wage cut, intended to save the company $250 million a year.

But YRC Worldwide said it needs even more help from its employees. Unionized workers are being asked to approve an agreement that would cut their wages an additional 5 percent, or about $1.16 per hour, until 2013 and cease pension payments for an 18-month period through the end of 2010.
my maths suggest that they get $23-$25 per hour (£14 per hour)

He was obviously being rather selective in his quotes.
Perhaps he should have taken note of these bits:

Exactly. The USPS Posties, can't even be bothered to go to the Front Door, and use a Letterbox. They just put everything in a Mailbox, at the edge of the Property. How can anyone possibly compare them to us, when it comes to terms and conditions? :d'oh!

Given the obesity of most Americans it's a miracle that the USPS has got ant postmen.

I think he had a point.

As i understand from our admin guy, who goes to the states a lot, their post vans are right hand drive so they can lean out the window and post the mail into each mailbox.
A large estate had been built near where he was staying and there was a separate building full of mail boxes so all the mail could be delivered in one drop.

Hardly conducive to loosing the pounds!!!

In the states, your postman/woman also collects the outgoing post at the same time. That is, the homeowner puts their letters in the mailbox, which is then replaced by the mail coming in. I never understood why we don't do that here. Mail gets into the system sooner and I don't think you'd need to cut anyone's job.

Ok, I'm American (no guns though) but the conditions are different in the states. Especially in the suburbs, you have these huge subdivisions full of houses. It's not a case of dropping the post off at one location and zipping off. (If you're a taxpayer, you want your post delivered to your doorstep, gosh darn it.) There are hundreds of mailboxes, often miles from the nearest post or sorting office. In a situation like that, it makes more sense for one guy in a little truck putting about instead of being on foot.

And heck, when you have the mailbox at the end of the driveway, doesn't that encourage your average morbidly obese Yank to waddle twenty feet out his or her front door at least once every day? In the war against fat, the USPS is our friend, not the enemy.

I wasn't trying to accuse USPS Posties of being lazy, for not going to each door. I just meant, that what they do, isn't as difficult (physically) as what RM Posties do.

I also realise the reasons for having the Postboxes at the edge of the property. But I still think that it's a serious threat to the security of the Mail. If it wasn't for the fact that they also collect outgoing Mail from the Postboxes, they could park up, and deliver to a number of houses (right to the door). Before moving the van up, to do another batch. But, because they don't have separate Postboxes for outgoing Mail. That's probably not practical.

Exactly! It's not a very PHYSICALLY challenging job. But it's not an easy one, either. There are plenty of demanding jobs out there, which don't require much (if any) physical effort. But my point about comparing USPS to RM, is: Our Posties have a very physically demanding job, with obvious associated risks. And we're also far more thorough (delivering to the door, not the edge of the property). So it would be wrong to make direct comparisons. When it comes to pay and conditions.
