Harrased over my sexuality

Hi I am a Postman at the ********** & am being harrased by my colleagues & management due too my being Bisexual.
I am permanently being called names & notes left on my frame,I have spoken to my Line Manager regarding this issue but he is not interested
& I am very depressed over the situation.
I am a good hard worker, who is reliable & caues no trouble but because of my sexuality I am always being degraded.
Any ideas what I can do next apart from leave that is?

You should ring the bullying and harrassment helpline as it's not fair you are treated this way...I'm sure someone will put the number on here for you soon...also if your a member of the union go and see your rep and put in a grievance about your line manager not taking you seriously about this. You don't need and shouldn't have to work under these conditions, your sexuality has nothing to do with the job you do!

So what did you do that the office found out you're bisexual.?? As I've said the banter in my office is very near the mark every morning.

And exactly what would you do then upmyroad - would you join in with them or support the person being bullied/harrassed? I am not against office banter and being female get a few comments which could be taken in a wrong way but I know my collegues are joking and I give as good as I get and join in with the banter but I would happily step in and defend depressedpostie if he was in my office as I don't agree with anybody being bullied or harassed whether it's about their sexuality or how they look or whatever the reason because nobody should have to go to work and put up with this kind of behaviour.

All it takes, is for him to say something to the wrong person. It happened once where I am (quite some time ago now), where someone discovered that one of my Colegues was Gay. The way he was treated after that, was terrible. Yet, there are some openly Lesbian, Posties who are treated exactly the same as everyone else. It's something that I've never understood. Why accept one, but not the other.

This type of thing needs to be stamped out, and fast!

I dont really see what business it is of yours or anyone else what I get upto in my own private time,it does not affect my ability to do my job.
I am not likely to follow a work colleague into the toilets & molest him, all mingers at my office anyway.
My private life is just that Private & nothing too do with anyone else as am not breaking any laws that I am aware of.

You are welcome depressedpostie....make sure you take it further or it will only get worse, I helped a fellow worker last year who was being bullied and had let it carry on for a while to the point where they felt they had to quit over it but after speaking with the bullying/harrassment helpline, the DOM and the union it did stop. So put a stop to it now and don't let them win by quitting.

I've know idea if there's any gays or bi's in our office. But I dont think a morning goes by without the banter telling someone your a queer your gay. and believe me a whole lot worse then that that I wont post. It's banter know one blink's an eye to it, Rightly or wrongly anyone stupid enough to tell the office they were gay or bi would by pulled appart by the banter. I suppose it's a very fine line between banter and bullying. but in our office as I say it's all taken as a joke.

You're right andy2007 sexuality shouldn't even come into it, gay, lesbian, bisexual or straight we all do the same job and should all be accepted no matter what. People who bully others really wind me up and the more people who report them the quicker this type of thing will be stamped out.

you're right upmyroad it is a very fine line between banter and bullying but when somebody has already complained to their line manager about a problem then I think we can say it is classed as bullying. Now maybe the guys making the comments and writing the notes and leaving them on his frame don't realise they are actually upsetting this guy but this is where the line manager should have stepped in and supported this guy instead of not taking him seriously, and just like you're office there are comments in our office every day calling people gay etc but the comments are said in a joking way and the guys give as much back and this is where it differs to what is happening to depressedpostie.
