our area rep has a serious problem with talking to everyone else about everyone elses problem there is no confidentiality with him if you have a problem the next day everyone will be talking about you or asking you what happend etc etc is there something we can do about this ?

It depends what you are talking about ie if its in relation to work issues that you have, he may need to investigate and speak to others to confirm the facts.

You need to elaborate on that.

I have moved to a new office recently and the CWU there are terrible. They seem more bothered about helping the management so they can end up getting a nice little job within the workplace. Where I was based before the reps where excellent and always communicated with the staff.

I have been told by this rep that he can sign any agreement without consulting all the members!! Surely not correct. If that's the case why am I paying to be in the CWU?

What can we do if we are not happy with the way the main union rep is handling important issues? He is misleading his members badly. If we can't trust those who should be backing us then we really do have problems!

Sorry to disappoint you but i am no CWU apologist as you put it and if i feel that HQ or a Rep are in the wrong i will say so.
Now back to you, you obviously have a problem with the CWU,and just slagging them off isn't going to help you or anyone else.
No organisation is perfect, and if the Rep is bad then that needs to be sorted out, but to make a comment like yours is truly childish.
What will you tell him if he ever gets threatened by a manager, or taken down the conduct code, forget the Union because you've more chance of getting away with it without the CWU.

Based on dealings with the hierarchy all the way up to the top - that is where my experience comes from...when the crunch comes the CWU leadership will bottle it and you and many others will be left to fight it out on your own....that is if you actually have the stomach for it...

I will watch with interest how much help the CWU now give to the bloke at Burslem....my take on it is that he will be left out to dry by the CWU....it is all getting too uncomfortable for them and they are being totally outflanked by RM.

The CWU did indeed desert me, but I won a positive outcome without them and with the support of members who actually had some principles.

I have seen officials side with RM and even give them evidence to attack members with....that is what you get in my neck of the woods...I ask you, we even had an NEC member on a picket line waving through waggons and not even asking them to consider not crossing....

RM will win this battle...the union are going to be humiliated, but, as always, it will be the rank and file who suffer, not the parasitical hierarchy I had the misfortune to deal with...

Don't think so - from that way I read it - for not offering practical advice. Hope I am not upsetting anyone here but I think "guv" asked for advice on a particular matter, you, within your rights expressed an opinion on the CWU, but the post did not address the original question. Geezer, I guess thought it was "childish" that your dissatisfaction of the CWU was the reason for your reply rather offering a solution. Don't think it was any deeper than that.

As Tman says sometimes its difficult to get across your opinions using only a keyboard and not upset someone I hope I have not done that here I am just trying to explain what I think happened. Of course Wranglered you could start a thread discussing how CWU members feel satisfied or dis-satisfied with the Union though I think that thread should be kept civil if you do decide to start one.

Fair point...but the beauty of these forums is that the best of the threads have some lively debate...long may that continue!!!

Whilst on ineffective area reps and the like, I note today the freeloaders are all heading to London for another discussion on what is to be done...

God help us how much that has cost the members...how much talking does it take?

Let us not forget that they have had since the 2007 Pay and Modernisation Agreement to tackle the issues, especially, in my opinion, pay. This seems to be conveniently overlooked.

If no pay increase is forthcoming we will have had no increase in pay for 3 YEARS

Forgetting all the IR issues, Bullying and Harassment, Modernisation etc...the CWU will have taken our increased subs over these three years to give us a significant PAY CUT

Perhaps a new thread on the pay issue and the abject failure of our negotiators might be in order..

Just to reiterate my point was to just tell someone to forget the union and go it alone was in my opinion wrong.
It was obvious you had an axe to grind,and if that was the case you should have started a thread about it.
Now onto what you posted above even though it's not on the subject.
If what you say is true and i have no reason to believe otherwise, what happened to you was wrong and i would have been one
of the first people to stand up for you if i were in your office.May i also sayI am glad that your colleges stood by you and you won the day and
